Friend of mine is starting a hosting company and was asking me for advice on what kind of hosting plans to offer. He wants to stay away from this "unlimited everything" crap and offer real plans. So I thought I would ask around and see what others think. I told him like 10G disk and 100Gb bandwidth for like $10. Would you spend $10 for what I suggested? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't, no. But that doesn't mean there isn't a market for it at that price. Depends how you market it and who your target customer is.

If you target non-IM'ers that's a perfectly achievable price level. I remember I started out on some crappy hosting for 10 bucks a month when I started as I had bought a site off some guy and literally had no idea how anything worked. I stayed with them for about a year until I actually worked out what I was doing lol.

If he's trying to compete head on with the big boys, then he better be offering a LOT of value added to get away with prices like that.

I would also suggest going with 3 tiers (assuming he's not offering VPS's, resellers and dedis) similar to Hostgator's options.

meathead is right, non im'ers dont mind paying that much. If you are targeting to compete with big guys, It would really depend upon avg max cpu execution an default ram for shared account...

Consider offering Sitebuilder, or some such animal that makes websites easily. Or pershaps a free series of templates, or a discount with template monster. Something that makes him unique. Then of course MARKET... MARKET... MARKET...

So what about starting with what I suggested at say $5.95 and then offering like 100Gb of disk for $9.95 or do you think he would definitely have to offer unlimited plans to succeed. If it makes a difference, he will be offering month payments instead of making someone purchase 1 or 2 years to save money.

I do not think he totally minds offering unlimited because he knows that no one will use more than 1 - 2gb of either resource, but it is more of a trying to carve a different path so to speak.

Host gator have just given me a major problem, they changed server settings reducing some performance caused area of my site to stop working and I though it was my script. Took me weeks to find out it was them?

Lot of people dont like them I only use them because I get FREE SSL, when you have a few e commerce sites selling real products this makes a difference and as most newbies try stuff like this it may be worth looking at i need two plans now with two more soon.

offer REAL plans that people can safely use their entire limit without getting suspended, people seem to get sucked in to these stupid 1tb of bandwidth on shared hosting crap but you will get customers who arent complete idiots if you advertise 'real' info not shit with a * subject to aup crap

That is the whole level of thinking for him (us - probably going to partner). Be more along the lines of Liquid Web and KnownHost than HostGator and the others. If some one is offered 10Gb, then they should get 10Gb and not be subject to scrutiny after 1 or 2Gb or so.
