If you're going to do it yourself, start with web 2.0's with relevant informative content. (ie. how to find a good mp3 site, mp3 site reviews. For bigger hitters, you can specifically target a whole article for a hard to aquire (new\trending or not mp3s), providing information about the artists, with an anchor of your target keyword to your mp3 site, explaining that you can find it their by using it's search function. You can expand from there for additional tiers.

You're not going to get a mediocre .gov or .edu link let alone a good one for mp3's. (Let's face it, you're not competing against iTunes by under selling them, right?)

Otherwise if you can get one way links from authority sites that have low outbound links, more power to you. Do it.

For an mp3 site, you can search for script that allows users to embed your content and from that, you can put a link back to your mp3 site.

In addition, try to have some lyrics page and you could do a social bookmarking for these pages. A social bookmarking to lyric page should be considered normal although you are using non white hat techniques.

Lyrics could be killer. Not everyone has access to Shazam right when they need it. It can be specially beneficial if you used "snippets" of the song or long tailed keywords of misconstrued phrases and ranked for those.

A (sharable) embeded swf player on the other hand wouldn't be much more than a gimmick in my books. I doubt it would direct traffic to your site. No webmaster is going to share a song you're promoting on their site that is truncated with a "click here to download" after 15 secs.

Nobody wants to stream a song they desire to listen to on the spot, especially on the go with lessening flash capabilities for mobile. There's got to be a downloadable option, and you can't charge for that obviously as you'll need advertisements or a CPM or whatever it is method.

You'd be better off being on top of the game and acquiring the latest hit and then uploading a youtube clip for 15-30 seconds and adding a description of your site with all rights reserved to the specific owners, and hope you don't get banned prior to you ranking prior to others
