what keywords to optimize for?

Hi guys,
I have a translation business, and I live in Los Angeles.
according to google keyword tool, "translation services los angeles" only gets searched for 720 times a month, which is not enough to even bother

"translation services" is too competitive, I could never make it to first page (or could i? you tell me)

"document translation services"...also not enough searches

I dont know if I should target only Los Angeles or the whole USA. Obviously I would rather get clients from all over the U.S. But are there any keywords that I could dominate without "Los Angeles"?

You could probably rank well for "document translation" or "translation company" - both of which get an estimated 40.5K searches a month - if you put your resources into it.

Is that 720 Exact searches? If so that is quite a few that you would get in the number one position.

Do you have MS? If not there is a copy of it laying around on this forum somewhere. I suggest getting it. It will tell you competition and other things.

You could also try and rank in more cities. Populated ones that are not to hard to search. Get listed in the Google Maps of every large city in the US for the search phrase. Then pending on the searchers IP address you could get quite a few searches per month.

Just a suggestion though.

720 exact searches, but when you compare that with the number for "translation services", it seems so small
How do I rank in more cities?
if I list myself in google maps, I will need a physical location. I have heard of people listing an empty piece of land as their address, but that sounds kind of illegal??

If your fees on each conversion are sufficient 720 searches is a great place to start. You will see some revenue which you can then re-invest into more SEO.

720 exact searches is not bad at all for your own business. Look at some of these people that are selling sites do dentists and they only get like 200 exact searches. I am one of these people.

Have you watched google maps cash? I don't think it is illegal to post your company in other cities, I think it is avertising. Personally I run a small company, not going to say what it is, but I put it up in different cities all over the place. I get tons of traffic from Google Maps. It is totally up to you though.
