Super super stupid question, like incredibly stupid I know. I've just never done this before.

So I'm planning on starting up an AliExpress dropshipping site for some apparel and collectibles related to a highly popular anime TV show with highly recognizable and distinguishable characters. What keywords should I target? I'm thinking (character name) merchandise, (character name) apparel, and other things relating to that for the main characters of the show. That sounds like it would work, yet nobody Googles the name of a character with "merchandise" or "apparel" directly after it, do they? It sounds like it'd almost never be searched on the internet.

Are there better keywords I can target? I know nothing about SEO and have been doing mostly CPA, but I know if I target the wrong keywords from the get-go then all my effort won't mean anything.

    Yes, they do.

Google "Goku merchandise." It's got 448,000 results. The first page is nothing but online stores offering dbz merchandise for sale.

That brings me to my second problem. How on EARTH am I, knowing nothing about SEO, going to get to the top of the SERP's when there are other sites with so much priority? I mean, Goku merchandise is popular, isn't it? I could never trump the top site without thousands of dollars in PBN's, could I?

Here's what makes me scared to try and rank: You literally have to be one of the most reputable and relevant sites to a keyword in the world for Google to put you anywhere on the front page. That being said, it's a little... discouraging, because being on anywhere but the front page (or page 2 or 3) makes you almost irrelevant. More than that, if I take all this effort to rank "Goku merchandise", how many people actually search for that in a month? Probably like less than 1,000, right? Is that really worth it, and is "merchandise" the best follow up to "Goku" for a Dragon Ball based apparel shop, or is there something more searched and just as relevant.

Google keyword planner is your friend.

Someone who isn't half dead can answer your questions better than I can. I don't really wade into SEO too deeply. I do know you can rank your site for low competition keywords. I do it for a client of mine all the time. I just give him articles for his Amazon sites written up based on a low-competition profitable keyword that I find for him. He ranks easily with just a few (10 to 20) well-placed backlinks.

That's about all I do as far as SEO is concerned. I don't go after anything medium to high competition (like Goku merchandise or anything DBZ related). I stay in my lane. For one, I'm too lazy, and for two, I'm not throwing money at a problem that can easily be solved if I just come at it from a different angle.

Like I said, someone who isn't half dead can answer this better than me. And hopefully they'll actually know what they're talking about.

But something like "Goku Merchandise" would be super high competition, right? Or "Dragon Ball Z Merchandise"?

Doesn't that mean unless I'm an SEO god I realistically have no hope of getting any traffic from the SERP's?

    Hey,

To get an estimate of how many monthly searches your keyword gets, you can use the Google keyword planner tool (GKP).

When searching with your keyword in GKP, it will give you an estimate monthly search volume of the keyword. Alongside this, it will also display the competition of the keyword BUT this is NOT the serp competition. It's the advertisers competition. Don't use this to judge the competition of your keyword.

To find the real competition of the keyword, you'll have to analyze the top ranking pages in the serps for the keyword and check their backlink profile using tools like ahref, semrush etc. If they are large authority sites and/or have a lot of high quality backlinks, then it will tough to outrank those pages (generally speaking).

For a quick but a little vague competition analysis, you can use automated tools like keyword revealer to estimate the keyword competition.

You should be targeting those keywords which have decent search volumes with low competition. These usually are the long tail keywords. So, instead of targeting the keyword 'goku t-shirts' you should target the keyword 't-shirts with goku on the front'. Again, this was just an example. I haven't checked the search volume or the competition of the above mentioned keywords.

Hey scraper, can you elaborate on what you mean?

Thanks so much! You have no idea how much this helps. I know this information is already on here, but I just couldn't relate one thing to another in the way you just did for me.

    +1

Not too hard period, just too hard right now. Climbers don't start by climbing Mount Everest :)

I'm gonna wreck medium competition SERP's one day, just wait :)

I don't think you understand how competitive the anime niche is. If you are anything like I was at first you think that it is relatively untapped and you may be able to do some unique thing with it. Reality is A LOT of seo guys are extremely into anime. Don't hold back though. You sound like you are at the point I was at a year ago. Looking at anime merchandise and things like mtg cards stuff like that on alibaba and being like OMG I could sell this stuff for way more. Found seo somehow and got a genius idea ... if I combine seo things with anime then BOOM.

A year later I'm not going to tell you that its not going to work. I'm aggressively pushing for it still. I actually ordered things from alibaba like plushies and even old retro games. I sold them on craigslist. I thought about opening my own physical anime shop with the things from it. Soon you will come to find that you didn't stumble on some hidden internet secret that no one knows about. Everyone is light years ahead at this point.

Doesn't mean you can't get something though. Just don't think you are going to go making big bucks sellings DBZ , Sword art online, pokemon, naruto, bleach, one punch man, vocaloid, ext... just by adding a little IM skills and seo to it.

Don't forget that with this stuff you are going to have to get really ballsy with pushing copyright limits. Like you will nearly ALWAYS be infringing on them if you do any type of apparel thing. Don't go thinking teespring is going to take that blow for you.

Good luck but just so you know you got some fierce competition. I quit my job that was supporting everything for me 4 months ago and I spend every moment I'm up aggressively studying IM and SEO. Putting action in everyday. Anime is my niche as it is MANY others and trust me the sec you get something going someone will steal your crap so fast its not funny and if you even so much as come close to dipping into someones stream get ready for so much negative seo you will have to sign up with a new ISP.

    No joke.

    Good luck.

    Start Grinding!

SEO will take a lot of work, particularly in this niche. There are thousands upon thousands of websites, forums, online shops and blogs. You should narrow your niche even further and dominate it. As someone before said, your best friend will be Google Keyword Planner. Just type some basic keywords and you'll have plenty of ideas to work on.

No matter what is your keyword research strategies you use. You can use Google keyword Planner tool, includes low-competition, high-volume keywords that you can use for your SEO campaigns. You can also customize your search and filter out keywords that don’t have a minimum monthly search threshold or a cost per click above or below a certain point. You Can also try Soovle (free), Ubersuggest (free) and Competitor Source Code (free)

Before investing time and money, make sure if the market demand of your product is healthy or not. Couple of tools are available at your disposal to figure this out.

    - Google Keyword Planner for AdWords : It will help you to find out the how many people are searching for your product online. It gives you an option to set parameters of how the search can be conducted. You will be able to select phrase, board or exact match to the specified keyword. Using the exact match will be a better option as it will give you an idea of the search volume for that keyword. You need to identify the difference in global or local search volumes. If yo will be selling to a particular region only, local search would suffice. You need to identify the long tail keywords variation as well. If you find a huge variety, its an indication that the product is being actively searched.

    - Google trends is also a good option if you want more detailed information on search trends.

Just implement ethnical seo practice without looking at the rank of yr current competitor's or those dorminating the top page.

Just see this as something you need to engage yourself with consistently in order to gain exposure. You aim is not to overthrow other site(s) by targetting first/top page) these are wrong approach to search engine optimization b/c we've seen 100 of such site() on the 1st top pages of google who are NOT making any sale.

You aim is to target niche forum, mini blog, update via few social media site(s) i.e twitter, facebook b/c most of these site(s) distribute to other social site.

So, keep promotion on social media within certain range to prevent spam accusation.

Finally, i can help add your business profile on one of the oldest encyclopedia (wikipedia) if, necessary. The web reputation & traffic from such site cannot be under-rated.

    Thanks
