What is With All the Free Sudomain Service Like Smartdots?

Doing a search for similar website and I see plenty of other website like them pop up: cydots, uonic, joynic,...

They all have the same template and even same (exact) message.

They give domain out for free so how do they make money?

If they are part of the free web moment, Why Can't I see anything about them on wikipedia?

All this clones are really strange:

    http://www.alpennic.com
    http://www.europnic.com
    http://www.homenic.com
    http://us.cydots.com
    http://www.unonic.com
    http://www.tipdots.com
    http://www.nic.ch.vu
    http://www.nic.de.vu
    .
    .
    .
There are dozens of them. Which is their parent company? I don't see any reseller program on smartdots.com, maybe that is just the most popular clone. Smartdots is under maintenance, support tickets are not answered as well.
Do you have some insights on this?

That is interesting right. Someone somewhere wants us to have subdomains just as much as we want and need them. Who? Google? Wordpress? Facebook? No ads on them?! :s

    No ads, no obligation.
That's what make it so strange.

    1) When you sign up, you give them an email address which they can then spam with their crap.
    2) They also get to upsell you inside the members area / admin panel. They can upsell their own premium hosting or domain services, or other people's web site related crap.
    3) Just having lots of users gives their company value, even if they're not directly making revenue from you.
    4) In general, freehosts can make money with stuff like popunders, forced banners, inserting backlinks to their own stuff on all the hosted pages, taking your 404 traffic etc.

Thanks for bringing these freehosts to my spamfarious attention. :)

    1) I have never received any spam email from them.
    2) You kind of have a point here. However, the only upsell I see is private registration.
    3) This part is confusing, can you explain further.
    4) It's just the domain and you can change the nameserver to your own host.
They don't force you to use their hosting. <---- That's what's weird.
How can they force banner if they don't control the hosting?

I'm just telling you how it is with free hosts... Just because they are possibly undermonetizing their userbase doesn't mean they're not making money. It's highly surprising they haven't mailed you with upsells because just about every free host will.

All they are providing you with is a subdomain... The cost is basically nothing to them.

Very very few people who sign up would sign up for a subdomain and then point it at their own hosting. Two types of people use freehosts: a) newbies who are too new or too cheap to buy a domain, and who thus want free hosting too; b) spammers.

    3) Having a large user base gives your company value even if it's a free service because it provides a potential conduit to those members. Look at instagram... No revenue to speak of but worth x million dollars.

There are other free guestbook and website "security" clones. Now it's getting obvious that Smartdots is just one of them.
I need to change all my redirection links because Smartdots stopped working, but I would not use just another clone.
Can somebody recommend a site like this, with free subdomains, dns management and all that stuff?
    +Rep for any tips.
