What Is Twitter Doing to Fight Spammers That Instagram Is Not Doing, and When Will They Start?

    Hi BHW,

A little while ago, I posted a thread (https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/c...doesnt-just-tighten-up-follow-filters.883983/) that asked why Instagram didn't tighten up follow filters to stop spammers. The answer I got (that I'm still convinced by) is that many people who are not marketers use the Instagram follow method to get followers, so cracking down on it would make IG lose a large amount of their user base. However, Twitter cracked down on the follow method and they're still going strong. Doing follow/unfollow is almost impossible on Twitter because of ghosting.

So obviously Twitter and Instagram are billion dollar companies. Because of this it is true that, in general, everything they do will be in their best financial interest, executed optimally. If this is the case, why would billion dollar company Twitter choose to crack down on follow/unfollow while Instagram let's people continue doing it?

If the actions of mega-corporations are based off of the hard data and logical deduction of some of the best minds in the world, why would 2 companies in the exact same position in relation to spam take 2 drastically different actions? What am I missing?

Twitter has really taken action. If you don't mass follow properly you'll be locked out of your account so fast.

Exactly. So Twitter concluded it was better from a financial standpoint (somehow) to stop thd follow/unfollowing method.

How can Instagram, who is in the same position and has just as much to gain or lose by choosing to crack down or not crack down on follow/unfollow come to a different conclusion, and choose to allow it?

    It's puzzling.

Twitter going strong? They just closed Vines and on a verge of buyout which no one would take.

Yea, that's not it. It's "just" verification.

Ghosting is different and there are two different kinds:
    1. Tweets getting ghosted: it's an old limitation and can last either 24 hrs for not so serious violations and can last forever for more serious or series of violations. There are different behaviours, which can trigger this, it's described in Twitter rules. It's pretty easy to avoid, if you follow those guidelines. You can easily check this in Twitter search with the query "from:username". If your tweets show up under the "Latest" label, you are not ghosted, if not, you're ghosted.
    2. Notifications getting ghosted: E.g. you follow someone and the followed user doesn't get any notification of your follow, neither on desktop/mobile nor in email. It's a newer thing, a couple months old. There are no hard rules for this explained by Twitter, so it's a lot trickier to avoid. How to check whether your account is affected? You need two accounts. Follow the other account with one of them and see if there is any notification (email, on-site/in-app) on the followed account. This is what OP was talking about.

    Wonderful explanation. Thanks for that!
And if the account is ghosted.. is there a way to retrieve/save the account or is the account ready for trash then?

When your tweets are getting ghosted at first, it's just a temp ban and if you don't violate the rules while the ban lasts, your tweets will appear in the search again, so there's a coming back from that type of ghosting. Your tweets can ghosted again and again and there's still a coming back. Although i'm not sure about the other one, i haven't tested it yet, it easily can be that those accs are toast for good.

Twitter is failing. They tried to sell it and nobody even made an offer..lol

I doubt FB or IG is going to model anything after Twitter unless they want to fail. FB and IG copy what works, that's why they did the Stories thing. If any app is succeeding, expect IG to copy that.
