Heaps of accounts that I follow from my personal account are asking you to turn on their post notifications.

I don't think I'll like this update to be completely honest.

    What are your thoughts?

My only thoughts are maybe its a way to combat those fake likes and followers? It's just an extra step for individual fake followers to switch on notifications and that'll be it.

Remember that Facebook and Instagram are not really similar. People on Instagram act differently.

It's reasonably easy to find people that follow more than 1-2k pages on Instagram; this doesn't ordinarily happen on Facebook. (Actually, on Instagram people follow a lot more pages than on Facebook, and this is because there is not an accepting request with public profiles).

It might sound unusual, but it's plausible that a non-chronological feed will give us more visibility. Right now the engagement is around 1-5% because, in order to get likes from your followers, they need to be online right at the second you post the content (1minute later and they will miss your post under the chronological feed waterfall). Furthermore, they need to like the content (this means that even if 5% of your followers are online at the perfect time, they might not like that exact picture).

With a non-chronological feed, I hope this will change because as of now our "reach" is feeble. It's just a matter of seconds until your posts get submerged by the unstoppable feed (which is way faster than FB feed) and you will lose hundreds of potential likes. I doubt it could be worse than as it is right now.

    Best Regards,
    Jaymien.

What Jaymien said is more or less the correct. Moreover, the reason why everyone is putting out a "turn on notification" post is because there was a hype that IG was releasing the new Algo today. Unfortunately, it won't be for months until they release it.

Hope this gave you your answer.

    Best Regards

Turn On Notifications is like the worst thing you could do. You'd be getting notifications non-stop from the accounts you follow, any user that does it, will undo it after they start getting flooded with unwanted notifications of new pictures.

I had the habit, in my personal account, to once a day scroll down until I saw a picture I had already seen, I'd usually not miss most of my friend's posts, but in my personal account I follow less than 300 people, and that would be very unusual having over 50 new pics posted a day. For users that follow hundreds/thousands of profiles, this could be quite interesting, from an user-experience perspective. I hope they'll still an option to order the feed chronologically (and that, like Facebook, an option to "not see" someone's posts and remain following -- like the turn off feed and remain friends on Facebook).

I got desperate the moment I read they'd be changing the feed, but, both platforms are different platforms essentially. I'll not get desperate until it actually rolls out.

Basically the change is simple. Instagram is trying to push their advertising product. So nowadays, brands have to use their advertising platform to pay and advertise. Basically you have to pay to reach your followers. Like it or not, that is the only way to reach them.

The so call robot to determine high engagement post is just a gimmick. Basically the prime spot whereby post will be viewed would be occupy by only limited high engagement post and sponsored posting. Due to the limitation of these slots, you can basically forget about getting your post visible to your viewers unless you have very engaging contents.

What this means is that instagram marketer are game over unless they can create original highly engaging pictures that attracts lots of engagement. Alternatively, buy fake engagement to get rank on top.

As long as your posts and content are GOOD and most of all LEGITIMATE, you have nothing to worry about :)

I think this won't hurt us blackhatters at all since what we do on IG is different than what we are doing on FB, Twitter etc.

On twitter and facebook we are spamming most of the time so it sucks if they changed their algo to a point where people only see the ones that have "value".

On instagram it's actually pretty cool because how would you spam with pictures? We don't do that! In most cases if we post pictures we want people to engage with the cause we want our CR's to go up.

Mostly we are creating accounts in specific niches where the goal really is to get huge engagement and no spamming.

I think this update will influence only the accounts that don't get much engagement to start with. Like personal accounts etc.

The "engaging" thing is b/s. It's based on number of likes out of number of followers. Not total number of followers. For example if I like my friend John's pics (he has 500 followers) than instagram will show me all of John's content, but if I don't like a funny page with 100K followers, than they will rarely show me their stuff.

Basically, 99% of you are screwed. Unless you have an actual company and website (CNN news, Gucci clothes) or are actually famous (athletes, actors) etc., than you will be fine.

But, 99% of instagram big pages are just instagram famous, basically fitness "models" who shoutout every other fitness model and all of these love quotes, video pages, etc., that shoutout every other page...literally these pages have 100k and 1k likes or fake followers etc.... than you won't be growing.

Long story short, every time you do a shoutout of another page (paid, for free, or inexchange for them shouting you out) you basically are making a dent in your profile. These posts get the lowest engagement. Basically, like instagram wipping you with a leash. Eventually, they will kill you off.

Basically,if you're large and popular people are gonna see more of you. If your account seems uninteresting according to the IG Algo, you're gonna lose visibility. I don't get why Facebook's always tryna interfere with what one sees on their feed. Most of us like our feeds, the way they are.

I agree, on my personal accounts I have some friends with higher/lesser followers but then none of my friends can compare to some of the celebs I follow.

I'm interested to see how it pans out, but I don't think I'll like it.

If you interact with photos/videos of your friends on a very regular basis, you just might continue seeing them. For now all you can do is turn on Post Notifications and pray IG doesn't push this update. :D

Actually, they're changing the algo to ONLY show "TOP POSTS".
If you're used to facebook "top comments" feature you'd notice that the top of the comments are the ones that have the most likes. To me, this means that you will only see the content that has a bunch of likes/comments. The same way when you go to a tagged location / or hashtag it shows the "top posts" which are the ones with the most activity "likes/comments within a short timeframe"... I believe this update will boost posts from well-known users and minimize the ones with 0 likes / no comments, etc.
