I've been chasing them, using social lockers etc for years and only just recently realized I have no idea what they do for me. Back to basics.

How do they benefit you? Do they increase your FB's ranking in Serps? Does someone liking your page mean it's advertised to all of their friends?

What am i chasing after here?

    Hello,

Creating Fake Likes doesn't matter but There is more importance of the real likes.
Fake likes doesn't help your page to get more publicity. If you want your page to be Popular you should get more and more real Likes so that more people can know about your page and they can also share if they want. Thus by real likes your page can get Publicity rather than fake likes.\

    Luck!

Value of having "Real" likes is that these are potential customers or subscribers which could help generate you income. If you want to buy hundreds of thousands of fake likes then this can help with with social proof to a certain extent (although it's easy enough to identify pages filled with spammy likes if you know what to look for).

Building real likes on Facebook is simply building a network of people who genuinely find some value to your brand and what it might share. Promoting your posts/ads to target these people is a great way of generating sales and interest from individuals who are already familiar with your brand.

Average users are getting tracked around the WWW like tagged animals. When they "like" your page they're probably sending in several other signals, they've likely previously searched for whatever it is you offer, browsed related pages, clicked on ads, and so on. All these signals combined reinforce your behavioral signals metrics, whatever they may be (probably potential purchasing power for them to sell more ads).

The value of a like is measured by how many times that person will make you money for as long as they like the page.

I agree. It's what the likes represent that has value more than the likes themselves. One real like may have a great deal of value while another could be worthless; depends why they hit "like."

It's not going to help your SEO much, but yeah it might show in their friends news feeds.

Facebook likes helps you build a community. I like to think of FB likes like a retention machine. You get those who
do read and follow you and it's an easy way to stay in the forefront of their minds.

Take into account that FB only serves 12% of your audience per post.

To be honest, FB likes can't affect SERPs. It has no power over rankings. However, if we consider the mindset of most FB users. FB likes can be useful in other ways, for example in marketing. Humans are usually wired to go with the flow and would go after things that are well-liked by many. It would then be possible to create a buzz if you have enough likes. Then again, it would be up to you how to make that happen.

Do you even offer anything "they" might like on Facebook? I mean, is it worth it, especially if you use lockers/etc that probably affect your bounce rate in a bad way?
Keep in mind, Facebook has a very specific content format.

Key would be creating something they are wiling to share on their own as a means of getting extra traffic from other source than G, again, if you're "not a proctologist" :D
