What is the reason behind this happening to the site?

Did you check the source keyword?
1. might be a small bot attack - happens to me once in a while
2. you got in news / discovery
3. trends

I doubt you got ranked and then de-ranked for few days/hours

You didn't show the time period. So it is hard to say. But in my opinion here are several possible reasons:

  1. It may have to do with Google algorithm updates (one in 3rd Dec, then 13 Feb, and the recent one on 8 Apr - did the spikes and fall occur on these periods?)
  2. One of your webpage may have been featured in Google's Discover. You can check this in your Webmasters Console (Performance > Discover)
  3. Just bot/spam traffic

I often have a spike like that before the bigger increase in rankings. My theory is that Google boosts the page to check if it is good for the users and then increases or decreases your avg ranking.

Yes, the spike occurred on 4th April. Got it. The algo update period may have caused the site to dance (average position did go on that day.)
