They have a read more button on as do more and more websites I'm seeing. What is the primary reason for this? Possibilities...

    1) tracking - see which pages users want to read more of past the initial content?
    2) increase interaction with page for seo benefits?

I find it kinda annoying personally, so why do we think so many sites have it now?

    Ad impressions.

If you make 1 big article then the user only sees 3 ads since that's the max you can have on one page.

If you cut the article up into pieces each time the user clicks "read more" the ads refresh and the user might see a new ad they will click.

I had also figured that it was there to reduce bounce rate or exit rate as well.

How would this reduce bounce rate?

You know, now that I think about, I'm not sure why I thought that.

I suppose I originally thought that because users would keep clicking the "read more" button on each page rather than read 1 article and leave (although I think I'm confusing bounce rate with exit rate in this case) or it would prevent visitors from leaving immediately because they felt deterred by the true length of the page.

But then again, if the users are not interested in the first page, they're more likely to bounce off the site for whatever reason rather than click the "read more" button like they would have done anyway.

Regardless, asap1's explanation makes more sense.

But if they are interested, they will spend more time on site, but idk if that helps. I guess main reason is ads like asap said.

Yeah, but my explanation was too convoluted. :)

Maybe to increase the time that you spend on that page is what Zwielicht meant?

Read more button allows designers to compress content on homepage, it allows administrators to easily track the most popular content. Another reason is to make visitators spend more time on the website.

as others have said, lowers bounce rate by keeping you on the website, otherwise you could just hit back, and bounce

Its to reduce bounce rate and i think also for adsense by adding more blocks...its annoying though.

    It is for adsense only.
