I've tried searching on the forums but couldn't find anyone asking this.
I might sound like a noob here, but what is the point of unfollowing users on Tumblr? People always talk about unfollowing accounts that don't follow back, what's the disadvantage of just keeping them? My accounts followers are getting higher and higher so I wasn't sure about this one.

You can only follow a maximum of 5000 people so you'll be able to follow more ppl once you start unfollowing people once you've followed 5000. I choose to be a bit more conservative and only unfollow those who aren't following back AND have been inactive 50+ days.

outside of a marketers perspective, coming from someone who actually enjoys using my personal tumblr account on a daily basis, the only disadvantage of keeping them is the max follow limit of 5000. also you'll find that many people do not check their tumblr as frequent as they would their FB or twitter. sometimes it takes some of the people who I have followed over a week to follow me back.

it takes about a month to follow 5000 people. If I were to just unfollow those who aren't following back at this point it'd be impossible. too many followers. I just unfollow everyone at once now (regardless if they're following back or not) and I've found it to be completely different than the other social networks. If I were to mass unfollow 5000 people on Twitter I'd lose a couple hundred followers, but on Tumblr I only lose a couple dozen

I would also encourage people to unfollow before reaching 5000. Having 5000 people suddenly unfollowed would seem like a pretty "bot" thing to do.

I agree with Pluss44- almost no one unfollows after you unfollow.

The man idea is to mostly have people who help your end goal- in most people's cases its to gain as many followers as possible.

That makes sense. Now using a bot does make it pretty easy to unfollow only people who don't follow back while continuously keeping that number down so it would make more sense to do that if you're using a bot.

Everyone cares about "oh no! you unfollowed me!" on Twitter and IG, not Tumblr.
