These methods work well in 2014 too. Here we can add social sharing (which is more or less included in web 2.0) and active communication with the blog readers/website visitors.
PBN's have always been the most effective for me.
How do you monitor how effective something is? Well... 1) use a tool to track your rankings and 2) don't use more than 1 method at a time.
If you are implementing 5 methods on 1 site at the same time you won't have a clue what worked.

I think the link building following pyramid is the best link building form today, if you build tons of link directly poiting to the money site, it's so risky as your site easily gets banned by penguin rule.
