I am creating a new site, but I don't want the public to see it before it is finished. It is a local community website that already has traffic.

I thought about making the hope page static, but it will still give all the menu options on that static page.

Is there a plugin or something that will show an "under construction" page?

    Thanks!

Search Google for "wp coming soon plugin" and "wp coming soon theme" , there are lot's to choose from and they should do what you want.
Also make sure that you still collect leads by having an email submit form, so that people can be notified when you go live.

Or you can install EasyPHP or Wampserver on your computer and do all the testing you want 100% offline.

This guy is correct, if you still want the page to be active whilst you build the thing, you could do all your designing and tweaking on a localhost. Then, you just need to migrate your installation and database.

Or just use the under construction plugin :)

You can install a simple "coming soon" plug in to WordPress. Best to choose one that enables you to make a nice custom
message or graphic so it looks cool :)

I didn't know about these WP plugins, always learning from this forum.

What I would've done is edited .htaccess, redirecting all IP's except my range to a static page, then let my own IPs through.

Nice thing is, you can whitelist your IP with these "Under Construction" plugins, so you can see the site from anywhere on your network, and then just deactivate the thing when you're done.
