Title is pretty self explantory. I'm writing original content, that targets my keywords i'm aiming for. But not sure what to do once it's up, do I submit it to article directories? if so do I have to change them or can I submit the same article?

Is there a tool that helps with this? Basically backlinks have been my biiggest trouble figuring out a consistent process for getting.

You have published it on your blog, WordPress automatically pings them out.
For backlinks use services in the marketplace, many experts on there so let them build backlinks for ya, you can then concentrate on your articles. Also post to social media is another way, so just post to your twitter, facebook page etc

Thanks for the quick advice! I have been reading up on and def will be looking into backlink services. Also with social media, would I repost my whole article and link to my page or just a teaser? I'm just trying to figure out how to not get dinged for duplicate content because I don't understand all these article submission tools since they would duplicate stuff.

Sorry I know I probably sound clueless, I've been doing PPC last 5 years and picked up a lot of this on the way but never the nuances. Thanks!

I just put in a few lines as a teaser and link, it works for me, but different people use different methods so just try it and see what results you get. Don't worry about pinging as it's automatically done by WordPress. You won't get dup content with pinging as its standard practice and you are just alerting search engines.
One last note, if you are replying it's best to use the reply button so it shows up as an alert, otherwise it could be missed
