Hi everyone. I have a book I'm creating, and I want to sell as a digital download. The problem is people probably can find it once its on the server (Google probably index it, and anyone with the link, can download it).

So I know AmazonS3 is a pretty good way, but whats a FREE alternative? I was thinking of using mediafire, and copying the straight download link to my e-commerce platform, but I found with mobile users, that link sends them to a mediafire page, thus, someone could copy the link.

I'm thinking sendspace, but idk, is there any plugins, sites, or alternatives to selling digital products?

    Thanks in advance!

You can password protect the file and email people the password upon purchasing.

I would but, I'm trying to restrict the directory if someone has the link.

Password protect the directory or use htaccess to prevent it from being indexed or create unique download links for each purchase or a plethora of other ideas.

I always thought just putting your files on a server and sending customers to the link when they made the purchase was asinine

How do I do the first two? Seems like there a million ways that are confusing.

The ecommerce platform is going to encrypt most of the link, but I want to make sure it doesnt get index, or users can access the main directory like you said.

Putting password on your directories can be easily done through the hosting Cpanel. .htaccess can be edited either using ftp or cpanel.

As its an e-commerce site I dont think you need to worry much about your directory access.

Best way is to not keep your ebook on your server and email it manually after receiving payment or as already said password protect the pdf and email the password after payment.

Simply putting a "no follow " tag into the coding of your download link landing page will allow indexing of your site and protect your dl link from getting indexed . example : <meta name="robots" content="nofollow" />

Leading people to a file host link to download your ebook after purchase is too unprofessional. May be u'd do what people told earlier like storing on ur server and pass protecting access but that too risky as someone if they'd share the pass in public places ur book will be blown. what i'd think the best is using a service like ejunkie and set it to deliver the ebook to buyer's email addy once they finish purchase.

I want to make something where they can download the file from the server without a password, but I just dont want the main directory to be easily accessed:

    Example: Mysite.com/wp-config/uploads

I'm thinking I need to password protect this root using .htaccess right? Any other advice would be helpful.

There is a really good pdf software at
    Code:
    http://www.file-secure.com/
    It's expensive.

It creates issues with Mac users and resetting of passcodes, and it can only be viewed on one machine at a time. Which people hate....

e-junkie has a great tool that stamps the customers info on each page on the pdf as a watermark upon checkout. There are tons of solutions with carts where you can upload as many passwords as you want to be delivered upon checkout as well. Or you can use one random password that looks unique but is not.

You will never 100% prevent pirating of your ebook. I recommend making updates to the ebook so people who find version 1.1 on pirate bay want to pay the 30 bucks for 2.1, make sense?

You will never 100% prevent pirating of your ebook. - I said it twice because it's true.

I wouldn't use something like file secure unless your sales can justify the monthly cost and you can alienate mac users. e-junkie is quite cheap and awesome.

Thats true, I understand it can be pirated easily once its in the customers hands, but I would just like to prevent hotlinking or a user viewing the uploaded page. Is that possible?
