Common browser do not hold referral when the user is going through a link from an https site to an http one. It's kind of a security measure that complies with the following standard:

Clients SHOULD NOT include a Referer header field in a (non-secure) HTTP request if the referring page was transferred with a secure protocol. (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-15.1.3)

The trouble with this is that the http site analytics will show that https referred traffic as direct traffic, which is a bit of a mess.

People is using the meta referrer tag on their https sites to avoid that. So you could use the tag if:

    - Your site is https.
    - You want http sites to know that the traffic going from your https site to them is actually coming from your site and is not direct traffic.

Hi, I would like to share some info regarding meta referrer to you.The meta referrer tag works with most browsers to pass referrer information in a manner defined by the user. Traffic remains encrypted and all the benefits of using HTTPS remain in place, but now you can pass referrer data to all websites, even those that use HTTP.
