Pretty much making different Web 2.0 sites and linking them together
per se and then directing a link back to the money page itself .. just look at it as a bicycle wheel .. with your money page being in the center and all the spokes from your other properties feeing into the same location ... and the outer rim connecting each spoke together ....

JQ

I think oceanz provides samples on his profile check that out

Is using a linkwheel a white hat method of gaining links? I've read on another website that if search engines work out that you are using them, then you will get penalised. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I think Lemonarian as a pdf posted here that describes them pretty well. Bascially just an interconnected web of web 2.0 properties and such linked togeher and then back to your money site.

a linkwheel by itself is whitehat.. the spokes usualy outrank your main page leading traffic to your main page. (when targeting low competition key phrases)

the real purpose (and blackhat way to use it) of a linkwheel is to have a buffer between your spamming activities and your main site.

you should spam your linkwheel spokes to death and if anything would blow up, your spoke would get delisted from google leaving your money site out of harms way.

make sure you use ******** sites for your linkwheel, you want the linkjuice generated to flow right on to your money site without actualy spamming your main url..
don`t use squido or hubpages for example. (unless you want to take over the entire first page for a keyword, for this squidoo and hubpages are good sites to use because they rank well.)

a linkwheel basicly is a interlinked set of dooway pages.

DutchRebel, I have to disagree with you and say a linkwheel is blackhat. A linkwheel is an attempt to manipulate search engine results AND the linking structure between the 2.0 properties is not natural and would not happen if a bunch of random bloggers set up each property independently for the purpose of sharing information about your site. Now I am not going to be a hypocrite and be against making linkwheels, hell, I encourage it.

We are not breaking any laws by building them, only some arbitrary rules set up by a bunch of guys who have more money than God! Do you think they played by any rules when they were building their search engine or dealing with advertisers or when trying to block or stop competing search engines?

But if Linkwheel(LW) is a black hat technique, search engines must have algo to detect it, and we may be penalized, so what is the use of making LW.

Do we really need unique articles for all the web 2.0 properties? i'm under the impression that one article spunned all across the web would be good enough.

Moneyman is correct about LWs not breaking any laws. When the corporate-dominated web says something is illegal, it means it just runs aganst their business model for monopolizing profits. So what if a linkwheel structure is 'unnatural' from G's point of view? A whitehat optimized webpage is also unnatural, from the point of view of a normal webpage.

The reason the optimized page is hailed 'whitehat' while the linkwheel is deemed not, is because the search engine accomodates some forms of manipualtion that doesn't impact its expected bottom line (say, cash from adwords), while creating effective linking networks reduces the pool of people who might need to use its paid services to boost their traffic. From a neutral point of view, a linkwheel is simply a whitehat method that is teased and put to work for blackhat ends.

There are different opinions about this. But in my experience you are fine when you spin one article.

in that perspective every link you would point to your own site is a blackhat link.
only links other webmasters point to your site out of free will would be whitehat links?

in a way i can agree with you, it is manipulating search results, but there wouldn`t be a lot of sites out there if in a perfect world nobody would create links for their own sites.

and since linkbuilding is an accepted and necesary thing to do i see it as a whitehat activity.

You are interlinking to yourself for the sole purpose of manipulating the search engines. It's blackhat only if you get noticed. It is what google decides it to be when they change their algo.

Blackhat v Whitehat is a pointless argument. Think high risk, low risk, and all wheels are different.

So to give you give you a specific answer I would have to say, yes and no.
