So I ran my website through a few free site auditors.
Many of these auditors told me to canonicalize my IP.

Could someone please explain what this means and how do I do it ?

How does it affect a websites ranking ?

    Thanks in advance :)

My experience of site auditors is that they are junk. Understand on-page principles and forget the rest. Truthfully 'IP canonicalization' doesn't make much sense to me, canonicalization as I understand it is transferring link juice to another page that contains duplicate content, i.e telling Google 'this is the page you should credit/pay attention to'. Domain canonicalization usually means telling Google to use the 'www.' or root domain.

[h=1]What is IP CANONICALIZATION?[/h] When a search engine index a page of a website than it try to get information as much as it is possible. It includes IP address also of you connection. IP canonicalization saves your website to less the chances of duplicate content.

How do you canonicalize your IP? I been using this site for an SEO score http://www.daraghwalsh.com/seoscore Everyone talks about canonicalizing your IP as if everyone understands but haven't found one good source of explanation.

You can add the next lines to your .htaccess to overcome the duplicate content on Serach Engines.

    RewriteEngine on

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain\.com [OR]

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^82\.223\.246\.132

    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

    RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^.*/index.html

    RewriteRule ^(.*)index.php$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

This is for auto WWW, auto redirect from www.domain.com/index.php[or]index.html to www.domain.com

    I hope that helps, OP.
