What is going on with the crazy high gas fees?

A few days ago, I had to spend 20$ to send 250$ worth of BTC.

Does anyone know why the fees are so high right now? It feels like two weeks ago, everything was normal, but now things are literally crazy.

The only thing popping in my mind is all the memecoin hype, but is that really the reason?
