I will start with an analogy. I was part of the trading community at one point, but the way funds trade is different from how the single trader works. Even if they are both trying to buy low and sell high or whatever, a fund must do it in a manner other than how someone trading from home can.

Alright, if you go to one of these companies that asks $20,000 per month for their services, are they definitely doing the same stuff that people here might? Consider what ranks sites: links, content. If you are creating your own links and your own content, a big company has to do the same thing, too? Are they just doing it on a bigger level? I can't think of anything they would be doing that wouldn't be the same. Do they have their own strategies that single people can't produce?

If your paying $20,000 a month, you are not going to want your site to be delisted due to Black Hat SEO methods. So my assumption is they would use proper white hat methods which take A LOT more time to rank. $20,000 a month wouldn't be spent on a churn and burn website.

    All assumptions here though

I'm not sure about the big firms since I only run a small operation, although I assume the good ones would be offering full marketing services on a large scale (i.e., multiple people working on the campaign), with the focus being on organic traffic. For example, they would have one person focusing on the on-page SEO, another one on the technical SEO, another person working on link building outreach, another person working on conversion rate optimisation (CRO), another person would focus on content marketing, another person would review the analytics data for idea on how to improve the campaign, another guy would work focus on social media promotions in an endeavour to indirectly procure backlinks, and the list goes on. This is, of course, just speculation on my part.

Sure, a small firm can do this as this is pretty much what I offer for my clients, although 1 person or a small group of people can only do so much with the time they have.

I actually just remembered a story one member shared here a while back. He was out searching for clients when he found a pretty big business with a shoddy website and no SEO/marketing. When he contacted them, he learnt that they were paying some guy around $10,000 a month for SEO. In other words, this guy was getting paid that money and he didn't he even lift a finger. I'm pretty sure you can find real life examples of that in your area, because even I know of a business like that where I live (which reminds me, I need to contact them).

Really big firms have well created PBNs and buy links on big media sites, almost like a PR firm.
Some of the PBN sites are so well disguised and high quality, they are actually profitable and popular sites on their own. Imagine having PBN sites so well done and popular that any time you added an article you got legit social media shares and high quality links to that article.

Paying more money for your concern is not good method. Try to use white hat method, to rank your website. And also split your team to do on page seo, bulid more high quality links and promote your link in socail media. It will also help you to improve your site.

My understanding is that a legit SEO company has relationships with editors at major firms
you take them out to lunch, make friends with them, they give you backlinks
imagine being friends with someone at BBC or Forbes
but it's very rare to find a legit SEO company, most "SEO companies" are some retard sitting at home creating web 2.0s and blog comments

They don't have their own strategies - they would (hopefully) have access to a large number of highly authoritative sites via relationships, editorial access or ownership.

You would also hope for a high level of technical SEO to be completed.

Bigger companies have a person specializing in every skill that affects SEO. They have local, organic, content, outreach/links, content strategy, marketing managers, and etc. For all the stuff you're managing by yourself, or paying vendors for, they have an employee that specializes in all of those areas.

I work with the firms of one of the top seo guys in UK. Blackhat is very much prevalent at all levels.. I find pbns to be core part of their strategy and they build quality pbns that even Google will want them to build one pbn network to rank itself..
