Hi guys. Once again i have come up on a new acronym here on the forums. I did google the term to get some base information, but I can't find what a VPS is in LAYMAN'S terms.

    A few questions:

    What EXACTLY is a VPS?
Can you please provide an example of how it functions?
How can I use a VPS to run windows on my macbook pro, and is it a better/cost effective solution to using something free like virtual box?

    Thanks in advance!

A virtual private server (VPS) is one of many virtual machines running on a single computer. They are often used by Internet hosting services. Although a VPS runs in software on the same physical computer as other customers' virtual machines, it is in many respects functionally equivalent to a separate physical computer.

Here is the Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_server

People usually use VPS to run softwares like Scrapebox, Senuke and so on. The advantage of using VPS is that you can keep running your softwares 24/7 without the worry of power and you also get a fast internet connection usually 1 GB. There are several VPS out there pre-loaded with popular SEO tools.

Judging from your question, you really don't need a vps right now. So I'm wondering what prompt you to search for vps.

anyway, here's the first result i got from google for term VPS.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_server

basically its another computer running remotely, that you can connect to run your programs, websites and other stuff.

a VPS is a Virtual Private Server. You don't "install" it anywhere, you typically acess it via remote connection, and act with it as if it was any normal computer.
Basically it's kind of like one computer that runs many Virtual Box at the same time and rents each and every one of them. You "rent" a virtual box from a distant computer, and control it distantly.

It's a "Virtual" Private Server, because it's not a physical computer that you're renting, but rather a virtual computer inside a physical one, and this physical computer lends you a certain %of it's computing power.

Okay, i'm understanding it better now. So would this VPS be me technically having a second computer/desktop, but this would be virtual? (E.g., would this VPS have a desktop screen similar to my laptop, would i be able to save files etc. on it). And, how would i access this VPS, could I do so while running my macbook pro normally, or would I have to switch back and forth between the "VPS" and the "macbook pro"?

    @testdrive
I noticed alot of SEO and other useful marketing tools are for Windows only. I searched on this forum and found that many mac users used a VPS to operate/run these tools, hence my question :)

VPS stands for "Virtual Private Server". This helps to host a different OS than what you're running under, and this way it helps you to use software that doesn't run well natively.

VPS is ideal if you need a super fast internet connection.

Vite Pour Suçer (VPS) in french

    In english: "Virutal Private Server"

Means you can have another computer hosted elswhere and access it remotely. So while it runs applications, it frees up your own PC/Laptop
You can also host domains and there's linux and windows VPS.

Go for linux with Cpanel for domain hosting and Windows platform to run applications only

No, I definatley mean vps. A home computer with standard Internet 10-15 Mbps does not compare with a vps starting at 100mbps up to 1gbps.

I fail to understand why people cannot Google such elementary questions and have to post them as a new thread =|

I fail to understand why people who have nothing good to say or offer to a discussion don't just refrain from doing so [or in your case, jump off a cliff :)]

Why did you click a thread called "What is a VPS" if you weren't going to answer the question or offer insight?

lol, well you sure just made a VERY useful post saying "they do it to add to their post count" didn't you? Hypocrite!

I asked because 90% of the search results on "What is a VPS" tries to explain it as if i'm already a computer and IT expert, which i'm not. I simply wanted someone to break it down to me in simpler terms, and to clarify some confusion I was having. Anyways, I got it now, thanks!
