What is a VPS?

I am actually using a dedicated server and I was wondering, what is the difference between a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and a Dedi?

Multiple VPS are installed on one physical server, while a dedicated server is one physical server.

They are both comparable in performance, however VPS are usually cheaper.

Some more things to think about... if you are utilizing the server heavily, a dedicated would be your best choice since VPSs will be sharing the CPU of the physical server. If a bunch of VPSs are heavily used, you may experience some slowness, but usually you get a certain amount dedicated to you, and it is also burstable which can be an advantage.

If you need to send emails...VPS is good.
If you need websites and all that good stuff, dedi is good.

Ofcourse you can email with both.

so here is how people usually go

1) start off with shared hosting like godaddy or hostgator.All is good until you get kicked out for spamming or your website starts crawling due to increased traffic
2) You jump to VPS which is like a shared host but you have dedicated cpu percentage etc and share it with very low number of folks - but then you grow your operations and realized its slower than you want
3) move to dedicated to get higher speed

ofcourse moving up each step costs more money

A better 3rd option, is to go with a VPS provider which will give your VPS all the resources of a dedicated server - 1 VPS on a single server, no sharing.

If they are good they will also have stand by servers, so if a physical server fails - they can move the VPS's about. Fix the failed server and bring it back into use or replace it completely.

But this all depends on the provider and the VM software they use.
