It's not defined, because it's not possible to define clearly. It's really on a scale. It's not so much there's good and bad period.

    Not in any order.

A good backlink will not have rel nofollow.
A good backlink has the link text and surrounding text with your keywords
A good backlink passes juice in regards to google so it will come from a site with a PR > 0 and won't have a ton of other backlinks going other places on it
A good backlink is on a .edu or .gov site
A good backlink is indexed by google
A good backlink is one that drives organic traffic to your site
A good backlink is any link on any site that is indexed be it nofollow, not on a .edu or .gov, etc, etc....as these can pass a small amount of juice and may generate traffic.

    Key Factors IMO:

    NOT NoFollow
    PR
    Relevancy

If your new dont get too worried about anything else. These are the main things to look for.

PR? Why? I've left a link on a PR N/A page, and got so much more from it then several PR6 links left. PR has nothing to do with a good backlink.I've seen authority websites with 50,000+ unique's/day having PR2- on most their pages, yet rank #1 for hugely competitive keywords.

Yes, in theory a good backlink is as jack said. But in actuality it's anyones guess. I've got alot of backlinks from non-relevant sites, the content is indeed good and original, and some of the sites are authority, some not. It's a combo I haven't completely figured out, but I'm on to it!

I don't think the type of web site is that relevant. For my money the perfect link ...

    * Has the target anchor text
    * Is from a page with a strong PageRank (> 3)
    * Is from a page with relevant content
    * Is from the body of the page rather than header, footer or sidebar
    * Is from a page with less than 99 other links on it

    Here's a video that may help: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1063279/seo_training_australia/

True about that spam sites. No doubt. I throw my backlink anywhere, EXCEPT on sites that are saturated with links, especially spammy links, this may in turn make google think your link is spammy. Now I don't think they'll deindex you, or penalize you too bad, or else we could do it to our competitors and get them deindexed, etc. It's just my personal experience, I won't put my link on spammy sites, porn content, or sites that even mention the word viagra, etc.

You, my friend, are an idiot. You could not possibly be more wrong. I can't believe you actually went ahead and wrote this reply. Blackhatworld is definitely going downhill. Kireol's post is a good guide to follow, except for the final point. Nofollow links are duds in the SEO world - they are the same as having no link.

I would write my own list on the qualities that make a good backlink but I've done it too many times before so use the search function.

yeah, that last one I should have clarified better. They do pass juice, but more on yahoo/bing/etc than say google. Google not so much(at all) ;)

That is the voice of reason and experience. Is there junk on BHW.. hey there's junk everywhere, but there's also nuggets which can make you wealthy, just search them out and apply. It's not rocket science, but giving insults won't get you very far here.
