I am just wondering when I am twitting links to my sites using URL shorteners such as bit.ly - how long those links going to last? Would not it be tempting for the shortener's owner start to purge the older links and direct the traffic coming from them to its own sales page(s).

Don't get me wrong, but I am just caution about spending my own time to make somebody else rich

I understand that most twits are short-lived themselves, but what about posting shortened links in other services e.g. forums?

    Looking forward for some answers.

    Thank you

I am not convinced. Any other opinions?

For example i am using offto(dot)net for url cloaking and framing. Yesterday at least for 24h period all users accounts disapered and all links were redirecting to some default sales page provided by owner. So I, as everybody else using that service have lost at least 24h of traffic + possibly some reputation by advertising the page they had no idea about.

Coincidently, unnamed free hosting that I am using, had consequently two outages during which a not found page was displayed staffed with Adsense ads.

This makes me think of "develop than scrap and park" revenue model, and I just wondering if anybody else has this fear and/or experience of putting a shit load of links pointing in fact to somebody else's site? At least with a hosting you can transfer it all within 48 hours or so, not so easy with backlinks :( . Just a thought.

Open URL Shortener. Google it. Make your own shortener for free. I'm using it, it works great.

yeah, that what I am starting to think myself. Question: do you use it for everything including tweets? Is there any disadvantage of using your own under-promoted/untrusted shortener for those things from the search engine perspective? For example hxxp://bit.ly has PR7

not sure its forever. on bitly, you can select keywords on the bityl/url , so instead of parameters you'll have those keywords in the shortened url.
so if select coca-cola , or mcdonalds, i'm not sure you will own these forever (if you do, i'll take bitly/google :))

A quick and easy solution I used was to purchase a domain name, then hook it up with Google Apps Short Link... I also ran my Gmail account on the same name.

Simple to set up, no scripts to install and I have control... All for the cost of a domain (you can use a subdomain also, but don't use a cname with the main domain).

In order to be able to change your link you could get some free web hosting, put a simple meta-refresh on it to your current drop site. Make the bit.ly link point at your free hosting, then whenever you want to change the link just log in and change the meta-refresh url.

Got me thinking of the probable use/misuse of our short URLs.
I always figured that only way short URL would go was due to SPAM. But now ???
This option looks kinda good to me.
