If you go to a website, the web-server can gather information about you like your i.p. address and user-agent (i.e. the browser you use).

What are some of the default things an app can gather about your phone excluding the permissions you grant (such as allowing the app to access your camera or cell phone contacts) when using it? MAC address? Smart phone device ID? Current IP address? Service plan?

    Ty!

The app runs inside your phone, so it can access all information about the operating system and network of your phone and a lot about the hardware.

These pages should give you an Idea:

    http://developer.android.com/reference/java/lang/System.html
    http://developer.android.com/reference/android/os/Build.html

Newer mobile OS's will have more and more strict permissioning systems. Anything you build now to exploit these holes will inevitably get patched in a later version.

the app runs inside the smartphone, so basically in some occasions it can access everything on the device, camera, wifi, model, mac add, etc...

But the newer version of the OS on devices can be very strict about accessibility, but yeah, everything can be access.

Well if you're using a lot of free apps, they often gather a lot of information about you, they can sometimes even send data about your position!
