I've never gotten a straight answer when ever I ask this question and I'm wondering what you guys have to say about this? I have close to 10 amazon affiliate links on my sites homepage. I don't shorten the amazon affiliate links or cloak them. I just have the "no follow external" plugin installed as I've seen it recommend a ton. What do you guys think?

In moderation they wont have a negative impact on your rankings. And you don't have to no follow amazon aff links. Just don't put to many links on one page.

Just to get a rough idea, how much is to much because a few of my sites use the "top 10" structure on homepage which means their will be at least 10 affiliate links.

It's not about the number of affiliate links, rather the ratio of useful content conpared to the advertising. There were always rumors that Google hates affiliate links or affiliate sites, that's bullshit, Google only hates thin sites with loads of advertising and very little value for users. The problem is that most people don't build sites and monetize them afterwards, but build sites around a monetization, with content just filling the gaps between ads.

Short version: Google doesn't care for affiliate links, but hates crappy sites.
