I found this recent article explaining the possibilities of the patent may mean for us.

    http://promotedprofits.com/googles-latest-seo-hustle-the-jokes-on-you/

    Here are a couple snippets...

Just when you think you've got it figured out they come up with something else... now more than ever adapt or die I guess.

IMO ranking is all about authority sites, if you look like an authority site then you're going to get ranked number1.

I have a set of things which I do which makes a site an 'authority site' I have a rinse and repeat method for ranking sites, I never look at where I'm ranking to see if I should do more or less I just do the set things which I know will make a site an authority site.. If that site never ranks then that's a shame, I'm sure however that one of the hundreds of sites I'm doing will if I just stick to my marketing methods.

At the end of the day SEO is really just about making your site look like it's adored and talked about by thousands/millions of people. Once it's got that factor then G will have little choice but to rank it as that's what the 'people' are demanding..

IMO most 'true blackhat' methods for SEO died out a LONG time ago, now it's all about quality and uniqueness - I'm not even trying to 'game' the system with spammy link building techniques and crap sites, I make legit quality sites and then make it appear as millions of people love it.. and it all looks 100% natural.. of course these days any link building is considered 'blackhat' by google. Linkbait and a few other methods are you're only options for true, 'whitehat'..

There's always going to be a 'criteria' for ranking sites otherwise google's rankings are just go to be random as hell and they will lose customers.. I will always be there to fulfill that criteria for my sites :)

I read that article a week ago and i believe the key is to not panic or do anything drastic when you see your rankings suddenly drop or rise. Just keep doing things steadily and not react to big changes. I also believe this may already be in the algo also.

Stuff like this is a good example of why you have to look forward if you're going to play SEO, instead of thinking Google would start implementing something after they patent it. What's described has manifested itself for years but when it was first observed it was referred to as the "reverse sandbox effect" (2008 and before) and "freshness factors" (2010-on) that let pages with lower observable trust/authority get a shot at the top spots.

As mentioned by others, just ignore it and steady as she goes.

As other's have mentioned, build high quality sites, and high quality sattelites/Tier I properties, and non of this will matter.

What this means is don't be reactionary. Come up with a good SEO gameplan and stick to it.

I agree with the whole making-site-seem-like-its-adored-and-loved.

I think that that is the real future of SEO. In some ways I'm horrified at this thought. In other ways I'm kind of excited; gaming the system then will become more complex and the barriers to entry will be higher. It will take a lot of the mass-spamming and start to legitimize the SEO community that bit more, which means we can all start demanding moar money :D :p :)

    Silver lining to every cloud.
