I have Market Samurai installed and have watched all the videos (or most of them). I see the same crap in all of them: PBR of 15% of more, <80-100 SEOT, 100K SEOC, etc.

Obviously, this isn't enough to determine if that keyword is good or not. What websites or tools should I be using to research it more and understanding it more?

I use micro niche finder. It works better than market samurai for me and its cheaper. Well market samurai is good for checking competitor and rankings though:D

Use google's ' external keyword tool ' to examine the recent search traffic directly passing through each keyword in google's engine. They are pushing fo their new format, be sure and search for the EXTERNAL tool, as the keyword suggestion tool isn't the same thing by any means.

I don't like the new Adword Tool so I revert to the old one...up top there is an anchor text that says previous interface click on that and your back to the old "better" one...

Search by "exact" method....include the CPC, the Global Search Volume, and Adsense Competition....if your going the adsense route....i normally find a word that gets around 3K per month and around $1 min per click then pop that into Google no quotes (people don't search that way) and copy the url's for the top ten spots in Google (the rest is crap....x amount of competition, bla bla bla...you only need to worry about the top ten spots because that is where you want to be) research each of those links for PR (page rank) and then how many links they have (be sure actually look at the links....a lot of time they are junky two ways links from link farms and you can easily beat those out with quality links)..I use the yahoo site explorer....pop open yahoo and in the search bar type site:yoursitegoeshere.com

If they are under a PR4 and have under a 1 thousand quality links that are worth trying to beating then it's a good keyword...anything over PR5 and over a a few thousand quality links then you can still beat them but it will take a long long time to do so....

There you go...a. short run down on picking keywords.....Market Samuari will examine the top 10 links in Google for you.....show you the PR and the backlinks and even let you click on those to dig into the links deeper for furture analysis.

Hey you seem to know your stuff on picking the right keywords..

Is there a definition of what makes a "Quality Link". My understanding is that a Quality Link is a high PR link (higher than the PR of your website) which is from another, similar website in the niche you're trying to rank in linking back to your site using the exact keyword phrase your targeting as anchor text.

Is this so and does it matter if you get similar links from non niche related websites. For example a link from a high PR site about Porsches linking back your website about cats?

When you find one of these websites can you also get many links to cover off all of your internal pages, using the different keywords you're targeting, with links from different pages of that 1 website you found?

I'm using my intuition. You can "feel it" when niche is good just by looking at SERPs : )

I use exact match in Google's keyword tool.

I like to see at least 1000 searches a month.

I then go to Google's top 10 results using SEO4Firefox and look at the PR. If the PR is low, it's an easy word. If I see lots of PR 3, 4, 5+, it's a hard word.

There are many times you can get your page onto the top 10 within a week with a backlink or two when you see a number of PR - , 0, and 1s.

For me, i don buy any keyword tool. Google external keyword tool is good enough.
And i choose keyword base on search result and search volume. Also first page result site's backlink.

I've found the most difficult thing is not finding the keywords but assessing how much work you'll need to do to beat the top 10's backilinks to gain rank.

    Let me explain:

I use Market Samurai and when you watch the training videos the stats they have seem to be perfect in that you beat the top 10 in terms of getting more backlinks to your site, than they have. However I've noticed that with some SEO Competition module results some keywords rank number 1 with 1 or 2 backlinks to the page and maybe 9 or 10 links to the entire domain and in the same results another site will have over 1000 links and won't be anywhere near the top 3.

Also in some instances the Backlinks to Page results also show some sites as been red for backlinks (what you should avoid) but these sites have alot less backlinks than others who show up, in the same results, as yellow or even green, why is this, is this down to quality and PR of their Link network?

Like any skill, this will come to you over time. To echo what was said before, you really have to look at their actual backlinks and their page source. It's possible a site will be PR6 or 7 based on internal lilnk structure, and their own backlinks will be weak along with their keyword density.

After you take a good look at your competition and take over a couple keywords you'll have a much better idea of the time and effort it will take. Until then, your general knowledge of SEO should help you rank for easy keywords. Start small and work your way up.

    @mofaux

What woulld you recommend as been the best site strructure?

A standard static structure with Home Page => Category => Post Articles (rather like a Pyramid structure)

    or

A standard Blog where home page shows most recent posts from all categories and links off with links to each category and within each category you see the latest post for that category?
