I'm reading up on it and a lot of people appear to have different answers. But one of the posts here on BHW that I'm reading right now says that if you want to have an authoritative site and 100's of pages, then all the pages need to be extremely related to each other. Is that true? Like if I were to create a website about technology, and blog about various different subjects. It can't be an authority site?

It will be an authority site. You need to have regular updated of contents to your site and get quality backlinks from other sites aswell. Its about regular updating your site with quality articles. Create contents that people want to backlink to ! And after some time you will find your site as authority site ... matter of time

An authority site is a concept of creating a single site, adding regular and written content, readers subscribe to the readers list and there is hell lot of information on the website about a category/niche. Its more likely getting an insight on IM and then moving towards even bigger steps or scaling up.

An authority site is any site that you spend time on. Not one that you have one niche, then SEO it. An authority site has tons of pages, lots of great SEO, and plenty of time invested into it. An authority site builds a reoccurring audience, rather than an audience that views the page once.

So does that mean the "authority" site can contain all sorts of different subjects? Like I could be making a post about programming, and then switch over to another subject like a product review for a tablet, etc?

Well, yes. Don't you agree that wikipedia is an authority site?
One thing's for sure, they do cover more then 1 topic, I promise!

If your site can't be used as a reference, it's not authority..

An authority site doesn't post just to show googles' bot the site is alive.
Every piece of content has a meaning. People like coming back because you don't rape their soul with: ads, spam, shitty content, bad user experience.

An authority site has followers and fans who knows - if you want/need X, then Y.com is the best place to go. No questions asked.

An authority site won't buy 5$ articles made by an indian guy + a spinner + copyscape.

An authority site will get new referrals every day - because there is at least one page on it that's better than most of the competitors. I won't be afraid to put my name on it. I won't be afraid to say I'm involved, it's the other way around - I'll be proud to be a part of Y.com

Everything else is a huge, high, smelly load of crap.

An authority website is a top quality website that is well known by experienced individuals in its market. It is a website that has content on it that is so good and makes the site so useful that people are actually glad they landed on it and want to share it with their friends.

An authority site is one that belongs to an author. The more well known the author, the more authority is the site. If the author is published in many countries, the site has world wide web (www) authority, otherwise the authority does not go to the www but on the domain name.

This is just a buzzword. People on forums now call "authority" any site which is just slightly better than a doorway orautoblog with spinned content. Don't take it serious.

An authority site is a large sight with over 10,000 words of content based around 1 niche, it could be based on baseball or it could be more specific and based on baseball bats. An authority site should have almost everything you need to know about that one single niche.

See what's what's confusing me. It has to be based on one single niche, so wouldn't that mean that Wikipedia is not an authority site? Because it's not based on one single niche? It has all sorts of information about everything. Ahh confused :p

Wikipedia is more of an online encyclopedia, those are huge sites. The authority sites I'm talking about are small sites capable of bringing in $100 a day.

Maybe u people should go and look up "authority" in the dictionary. See definition 4.a. here.

So an authority site in theory should mean a site that offers expert information. That would be the ideal theoretical definition. In practice however, authority has to be algorithmically computed by a search engine, hence it can be incorrect, partially incorrect or engineered on purpose into seeming more authoritative than it actually is. That would be the SEO authority.

Another kind of authority would be human perceived authority. That would mean what people subjectively think and generally has a relation to popularity. In other words a highly popular site may be subjectively and incorrectly be perceived as an authority but in fact present factually biased or incorrect data.

Ideally, to consider your site is an authority in its niche you should cover all aspects. In a nutshell you could consider an authority site a huge site that is well known and has strong natural links from a shitload of sources.

For example Amazon would be an authority. Not just from a SE perspective but it is highly popular and has tons of products. Hence it is a useful resource.
Wikipedia would be a useful resource on various information across a multitude of topics.
BHW, Moz, SeoBook would be authority sites on SEO.

But in the end what is authority if not a perceived thing. Does it mean all posts on BHW are expert-grade or even useful. Or on Moz or SeoBook? Does it mean all Amazon product pages are offering the highest amount of information and details on that product? Does it mean all Wikipedia pages are in depth or 100% accurate? No, not really.

You have to make the difference between perceived authority and popularity on one side, algorithmically measured authority from a SE's perspective and actual authority (e.g. a government site or a scientific organization <e.g. CERN>).

Naturally, SEO authority comes from links, references from other sites towards your site. That means, to achieve this naturally, you need to have something on your site that is truly useful, interesting or novel. There's one thing to hire some guy on Odesk to write you a 500 words article on weight loss and there's another thing to interview several doctors, athletes, psychologists, scientists, and conduct a long term study at the end of which you present you findings as a resource. And there's another thing to actually do medical research and find out something not known previously and then publish it as a research paper.

What jazzc said happens quite a lot:
If Joe Lame posts on his blog about animal rights nobody gives a fuck. If GoDaddy's CEO posts about animal rights after his stunt with the elephant... that's another story.

Happily, if you just want to make money... you only have to be good enough to outrank the other fuckers in your niche. Just keep in mind Google is biased. That's bad because it will rank even a crappy page from Wikipedia or Amazon and it is also good because it's an algorithm and algorithms can be made to work to your advantage once you understand them.

Building an authority sites involve a deep understanding of your market, and a lot of patience. And once the site becomes an authority, it will remains for years. This is extremely powerful, especially in markets where being an expert is given to only a handful of people (like in martial arts or self defense for example). Unless with Internet marketing where you have hundreds of experts.

An authority site is characterised by solid unique contents and superb ranking on the major search engines.
