If for example I have a backlink of PR 4, and I know for sure G indexed it. But 1 month later, it is no longer there, does that mean that that PR 4 backlink is now useless? Thanks.

No it is not useless. Any backlinks are good, the backlink could just be being re-indexed. But remember about Big G's recent update, its all about quality of your links instead of quantity, if anything try and ping the link, and see if it comes back. Wish you the best :)

Google only shows a fraction of the backlinks to your site. It really doesn't mean anything. As long as Google knows about your links you're fine.
