    Hi guys,

I have website where i had my inner page ranked for kw but suddenly after some seo my homepage outranked my inner page.

What exactly is wrong? I mean is it because my inner page is overoptimized OR there is better offpage on my homepage when it comes to anchor diverisity?

Should i continue ranking my homepage or try to rank my inner page again?

    Thanks for advice

Compare your homepage's title and your internal page's title and make your homepage's title less similar to your internal page's title. Then wait for Google to reindex both pages. That should fix the problem.

Could just be the links pointing to your homepage are linking you for that keyword. With Google all about trust now, your links could have just made your homepage rank because of other incoming links. Hard to really say without seeing both pages and knowing the link building you've done.

    Home Page:
Also this sometimes happens when you have the link from the homepage to the article page where the anchor is the article title. Therefore google ranks the homepage for this keyword as the keyword is present on the homepage text.

    I've had the same issue.

It has happened to me when I have created a page for my kw, when the way my site was silod was for my homepage to be the target keyword.

So if I had categories on an e-commerce site: blue widgets, red widgets, green widgets.

Then logically the homepage should target widgets, but then if you create a page for widgets then it is "keyword canobolisation", and Google doesn't know which page is more relevant for the keyword.

    Home Page:
And another reason could be keyword overoptimisation for the article page.

Like I explained above, you are targeting similar keywords on both pages and that's why the wrong page is ranking. It's not Google's fault. Your site confuses them. Make your homepage less relevant for the keyword you want your internal page to rank for by removing the keyword or its variation from your homepage's title.

It doesn't just happen with exact keywords. It can also happen if the target keyword of your home page is similar to the target keyword of your internal page. For example:

Homepage: best vacuum for pet hair
Internal page: best canister vacuum for pet hair

In this scenario, if your homepage contains the word "canister", it could outrank your internal page for the keyword "best canister vacuum for pet hair".

    Hope you understand.
