    Hi guys,

Just a quick one. I was just wondering if google tracks mac addresses? I wrote a few reviews online (using false names) and the company in question is trying to ascertain my identity and threatened to sue me for the reviews once they find me. I didn't use my home PC or phone, but a work machine. Can google find out who I am? And more importantly, can google hand over my ip and mac address to the company in question? Isn't this illegal/against privacy legislation? On google's website it says something about UUID, but it doesn't specifically mention mac addresses.

Thanks for your help! And hello I'm new here!

No, they cannot track MAC address. It is impossible because it would be a big security issue for browsers and they don't allow that.
Javascript runs in a sandbox in every browser. No website can get your MAC address unless you download a 3rd party executable file.

Google doesn't directly track your MAC address but It tracks your ISP information who has the information about MAC/IP address and all. If required, they can check with your ISP and find you at anytime.

It is impossible to track Your mac through web browser, only operating system can do it, so someone have to inject You with virus to do it.

Quite a few mixed replies here. Thanks for everyone who took time to reply.

I did come across this interesting post which makes good reading:

    http:// <remove> answers.google.com/answers/threadview/id/765054. <remove> dot html

I am slightly more at rest after reading this that the company in question will not be able to easily trace me having read this, considering that I have only written the reviews in public (out of the home) places, on public and other private networks. The article seems to suggest the only mac address google will have access to is that of the router just before the actual device (laptop/phone). Does anyone know if technologies and laws have moved on since the article was written such that these big evil corps can now record your device's mac addresses too?

Reading and learning more about how google operates has definitely made me more wary of what I google and indeed of actually using google. I now use duckduckgo, tor, and bing. Will be avoiding google from now on as much as possible I think.

On the reviews front, has anyone here been threatened with legal action for writing a 1* google review for a terrible company? I think it's a disgrace that a person can be sued for writing an honest review. It says more about the company than the reviewer if they feel the need to threaten to sue a reviewer rather than address the concerns brought to light in the review!

Google are evil. The more I read about them, the more I am wary of them. I read somewhere that their streetview cars have been secretly collecting private router info. as they've been mapping the streets. Really really scary!
