I'm pitching a couple new clients. That question has come up before. Sometimes it's unavoidable. Do you give them a red herring? Do you tell them it's proprietary? Do you tell them that you won't give out that info?

you partner with hundreds/thousands of webmasters/bloggers/editors/etc that give you backlinks. no need to tell them about anything below tier1 ;)

Just tell them there are certain aspects of your business which you automate (some, not all), but that you dont give out your trade secrets since your services are proprietary.

You are the expert, just tell them that you use a wide range of tools and ranking technologies.
If this is for IG then they just want to know the bot to buy it for themselves.
Why pay you when they can buy it?
This is where you need to sell your self and say the bot is irrelevant and that the tools that you use don't matter, only the results you will achieve for them.

I hate this. I get it all the time. I just say it's proprietary and that all they need to worry about is rankings, traffic and revenue increases. Everything else is unnecessary for them to know. If they don't like that, then find someone else. Once I gave out too much info and they got rid of me and tried to do it themselves. Failed, asked me for advice a few months later and I told them that they abused my trust and I couldn't work with them any more.

I normally tell them, I use only 2 tools. google keyword planner and my brain.
If they want to do it themselves, I give them the link to keyword planner.
    Its Free
Bur they need to pay for my brain

I get this all the time. I tell them I don't use any bot, I do everything manually. Of course they don't believe me at all. :D
