I hate it when people are asking me "how" I rank my site in Google.. Friends, family or whoever are often asking me so you've build a nice business.. but how did you rank in Google in those top positions?

I always tell something like: "well it's part of the marketing strategy to do Search engine marketing and so I achieved these results.." - nice! But how did you do that actually?

pfff... I never know what to say then, I just say it's a matter of marketing. But you can imagine someone who is working in a bank or in construction or in real estate don't understand it. However I hate to explain this. What do you tell these kind of people or what do you advice me to tell them since I don't want to "reveal" any secrets though ;)

You provide useful information because content is king. You rinse and repeat that and laugh all the way to the bank. Then you put it on autopilot and then sell the sites because you like to build websites, not maintain them. Then you write a book about all this and G ranks you on top because it's a secret that has the potential to turn the IM as we know it upside down.

    It's simple really.

maybe that's what they want, the secret. So there's no way to answer them, people can be sneaky. so tell em the secret is to go read.

on the other hand there are people who really just want to be thick just because you can do something they can't do, so to them there must be a magic button you press 10x faster than your competitor to do it.

It depends what the person who's asking wants.
    1. If they want to get into the business, then get them to work for you. Tell them you'll teach them how to do it. You'll profit and help out someone.
    2. If they're just trying to find holes in your work and poke you to death with ignorant questions to make you look stupid, then just use a bunch of big words and acronyms.
