a little secret from the distro :)

... call best buy and ask them to get you the "topseller" version. should be much cheaper.

I would try to get the i5 if its in your budget. I would also check how much space it has to upgrade the ram at a later date.

I really like thinkpads, my laptop is one. The problem is theyre a lot more expensive.

edit: Im not sure if you care about the brand but this is in your price range

Yep, Lenovo is fine, had one for three years with no trouble. I would like a little more in terms of graphics power but that's typically a problem at that price point.

no kidding. I bought a $2200 dell xps laptop in 2007 only to have the mobo go out on me post-warranty in 2010, so i replaced it, then not 6 months later, it dies AGAIN. So off to ebay it went. salvaged $200 for it and I'm not planning on getting a laptop again anytime soon. IF i do, it will be a 2 year old USED laptop no more than $300.

    computer hardware sUCKS nowadays.

of course it's dell. Dell always sucks. I had alienware area-51 m15x and the vga card died in just 2 months. I claimed warranty and the new one didnt even last for 8 months. note that I didnt play a lot of games there. Their hinge also used plastic which is quite absurd for such an expensive laptop (where vaio or macbook never used plastic there)

Laptops do last you guys just use them wrong. Below the laptop are fans; if you keep it on a flat surface the hot air escaping is trapped and therefore overheating the parts. I have a USB powered stand with a fan underneath my laptop. It keeps it tilted on an angle making it easier on the wrists and it keeps my laptop cool.

I think a good laptop should not need any accessory to work properly and last. Of course that improper use can damage any laptop, but the question is how fast.

I had a toshiba laptop which survived many of my abuses, I saw vaio's dropped and function with no problems, I used a panasonic in below zero celsius and the hdd did not fail on me, I had and ibm used outside in a construction zone full of dust.. try these with lenovo, viewsonic and other new names.

I would go for something from Asus, even if you have to go the used/eBay router. They build some of the most solid, bang for your buck hardware out there. I am on an Asus G51 right now that I picked up for $600 used about 6 months ago, you can get a refurbished one for about that much these days. Has a great GPU, too, a 1gb GTX 260, it is actually a very capable gaming machine, if you are at all into games.

I am an IT professional, and I would say if at all possible, Buy a Case PC, for the same price of the Notebook, you will be able to get top of the range hardware that is easy to upgrade as you get more money, and you will be able to use it with anything ( Gaming, IM, School, Porn if you like to loool, Etc.) The only downside is that you won't be able to Carry it with You. But Who Care's, get a notepad, and just write everything down and Do it later when you get home.

In that way you will have a great life. Later on what you can do is buy a cheap secondhand Notebook, and only use it with stuff like MS Office for the Schooling stuff, and carry a Flash Drive with you so you will be able to copy the stuff from the notebook to the pc.

You will be much happier guaranteed.

Hindsight is 20/20, man. I am a college student and I wish someone told me this. I would sell my soul to have a desktop right now instead of this laptop. I would definitely get a nice upgradeable desktop and, if necessary, grab a cheap ass laptop that can run a word processor. It is so much better in the long run if you can't afford both!
