So I'm starting my first, real big niche site; goal is to works towards making it an authority site. It's in the health niche. Usually don't make threads like this, but I'm going to be investing a lot of time and money into this, so I thought, hey why not ask my BHers before I begin.

    - 40,500 - Global exact match searches
    - 27,500 - Local exact match searches
    - $11.00 - Average CPC

Some of the sites in the top 10 include WebMD, MayoClinic, About

    What do you guys think?

Well said. I was just trying to get a rough idea. I guess I shouldn't have pointed that that I already know that in my original post, LOL :p

Just a quick glance it looks a bit difficult to reach top 10. But it wouldn't be so bad if you had a pretty big budget. How much are you willing to invest into this?

I have $1200 at the moment. I can probably fork out $400 a month ish..and I'll reinvest anything I earn from longtail keywords and such back into it. What do you think?

What credentials makes that keyword high competition? imo that looks quite easy to rank but it would take some time (~3 months) with zero investment (all needed tools owned), but buying articles would be a good idea... you could almost rank all of those sites with high quality articles, around 10 should do it (550- +700 words, longer the better)

I will be watching your thread now and then :)

I think that would be enough, but to crack the top 5 and start getting traffic to gain some money back from your investments would take a while, and you would have to invest most of that money to get those results which are not even guaranteed. Are you willing to take on such projects?

If not, and since you only have $1200 budget, IMO i would go for other small projects until you get more money to where you can take the loss until the site begins to bring in traffic.

Probably because of the age of the domain and the authority they serve

You should be able to rank top 5 for that budget.

Just get exact match domain + 10 or more articles very keyword rich articles, and mix everything up.

Buy some really high end SEO services, like link arrow and deadly seo, and buy a mixture of fiverr gigs from web 2.0 to social bookmarks edu links etc. (dont buy sb or xrummer to your main site) for like $100. And you will be golden in 1 month.

Look in the number 14 site. It has no age, backlinks, pr and no dmoz, yet it ranks in number 14. What makes it rank is the correct title, description and h1 tag. I think you can easily rank it on top 15 with decent onpage seo and backlinks. But going to top 5 must be hard.

Thanks everyone. I'm buying the domain tonight and getting started. It'll be a long term project, but I know it will pay off big time.

As far as domains, the EMD is not available. So far I've found

    KEYWORDblog.com
    KEYWORD101.com
    aboutKEYWORD.com
    KEYWORDsite.com

    What do you guys think?

I'm having a big niche health site and to be honest I'm doing a fair job for now. I did not earn some big money, but rankings are getting better and better each day. If you are willing to invest money, that means you probably know what you are doing.

When it come to health sites you have to be aware of some big authority sites and of course Wikipedia. Regardless on that, I'm using Amazon and I can say I am satisfied for now..
Wish you best of luck and I will give you one golden advice: "Always watch the competition, they are our best friends :)" Look what the competition is doing and look how can you improve yourself even more.

Another problem (could be advantage, though) in health niche is to have some backing by an MD or some authority. I've had webmasters of such sites report me for not having "medical background" when I kicked their butts and unfortunately g listens, especially when you use a-dse-nse

As someone who runs a decent sized authority white hat site (50K+ UVs a month and growing) I will give some tips. Listen and follow them if you want as this is my own experience talking:

    * It's good idea to have real world experience in what your starting a site about not just because "its a good market". I have several years experience in my sites niche. experience that has made me money offline unrelated to internet marketing. The reason for all this is your "original content" really should be original and not just copywritten.

*Authority sites are all about content (not just quality but numbers) I'm pushing for 3000 posts (500+ word articles) by the end of next year. I will probably be shelling out some major bucks in these coming months for content as it would take to long to provide everything myself.

*Visitor interaction is a must whether it be comments, guest posting, etc. I can't think of any authority site that is a "static site" they are all dynamic and let's the visitor do something or contribute something.

    good luck

You do bring up some good points, but I'm not sure if I completely agree. I mean, let's say your niche site is on diabetes. In the end, your content is going to be likely the same thing hundreds of other sites have written about diabetes. Unless you've made some new found discovery in a research lab? I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying. Could you give me an example?

But I do agree that visitor interaction is important.
