It all depends on what exactly you want to achieve. For simple basic videos then the likes of windows movie maker is fine, also Microsoft powerpoint can now save as video, for real high end stuff then you need to be looking at Adobe After Effects or the like.

virtual dub is freeware, Windows moviemaker might be already there except on linux, then the adobe elements progs, magix stuff, corel stuff... and the professional progs: Adobe premiere pro, premiere cc, final cut, c4d if you want cinema qual. animation, Poser if moving characters animation is enough, eon vue if you need easy cg graphic backgrounds... etc. depends on operating system, hardware power, your needs, the complexity of your ideas. btw.: if you just want to make yt. tutorials then you just need screen capture progs, like camtasia suite etc. ok, enough namesdropping XD have fun

First what do you want to do with it, it all starts from the bottom, if you want to do basic things any editor is suitable, but for hardcore things expensive software

Personally, I just use iMovie and it has been more than enough for me. Although, I'm not very advanced in terms of video production.

For simple extraction of video, I use Movie Maker.

For recording of step (like walkthrough), I use tools from techsmith

I use adobe premiere pro, it takes time to learn. If you just want something faster and easier, but very capable, Camtasia is great
