Hey just wanted you guys opinion, i do seo and i put a link on a site that i do i.e. SEO By www.xxxxx.com, will what if the competitors start calling you and want you to work for them? like 4 of them called already in the past 2 years and I TOOK EM ALL ON!

Just wondering what you will do if this happened to you, there is no contract written that i cant work for someone else in the same industry but i feel so ashamed :)

depends on if they are in direct competition with my current client or not. if it is local stuff, then I don't.

For me if it is not the same keyword then it is fair game. If they are targeting the same keywords, I do not take them on. You are artificially creating a need for your services this way.

That's an obvious conflict of interest. You can lose all the clients if they find out that you're playing them like that.

Jesus that is weak. You're essentially competing against yourself and taking multiples of the money...

When working in any professional capacity, conflict of interest is bound to come up and it is really important to handle it well. As others have said it could really ruin your reputation if you do both.
In the work I do (not seo) I have a conflict of interest section in the contract, that I won't work on projects if any personal or professional conflicts arise.
Just be careful whatever you do :)

I'm not sure its good for your business.

    1. if they will find out you get a really bad rep and no one will work with you.
    2. your competing yourself which is kind a funny
    3. if you will be legit and say your clients that their competition contacted you and offered you a better price etc etc your current client will pay you more im pretty sure and also appreciate you much more and will be paying for long term so its a win win case.

You can take all of them money and do work for them all but i can't see you doing it for long term you will be discovered and you will only lose much more then getting 3 more clients.

    this is my 2cents
    Cheers

I prefer to be open with something like this, maybe set up some sort of understanding, where either one can pay you to be exclusive (money talks) or you can do service for them all, they will all probably end up in the top 4, once you get them up there maybe make them bid for 1st, second, or third spot?
I think I'd probably prefer to have someone pay me to work exclusively for them, but if you give the same offer in writing to them all and they think that somewhere in the top 4 is good enough you may end up with more money that way, without looking sleazy.

"business is business, if you can pay me an additional 50-75% of what I would make from your competitor(s) I will not do business for them"

    ...it could work...

I come from a land downunder
one keyword - one customer. makes a good business

My SEO business is only a small offshoot of my main site and everyone wants the keywords I'm targeting for myself, As my niche is tourism in the town I live in (which is a tourist town) I don't get too many clients.

    This is very unethical.

If you want to run an unethical business than just keep doing what your doing. Greedy people usually go down pretty hard, look at the mortgage industry.:Flush:

You should be offering a non-compete agreement with your service. How would you feel if you rented a storefront and told the landlord you were opening a florist, than after the lease was signed he said "hey, how bout I open a florist next door to this guy". Its just bad business.

Wouldn't do it. In my opinion it pays out more in the long run if you treat your customers good and fair. Instead of taking all the money from the competion, i would tell my customer about the whole story and that i have declined the other offers. I bet this will impress the customer and he most likely will spread the word about you being a very honest company. And that's something money can't buy. A good reputation is everything in the net, where everyone is scared of getting scammed.

And like someone else already said, how would it end up with any decent result to compete with yourself on the same keywords? Who will win? You or you? :D

Yes, this is blackhatworld. And so what? This line is said so much in discussions it's getting really annoying. The above posters are talking about being business smart. If you're business smart you earn more money in the long run, so then how does your statement relate to the discussion?

More on topic, this is quite wrong if you're accepting clients with the same keyword. In almost all businesses youll have non compete clauses and other restrictions not allowing this. Take for example researchers for a pharmaceutical company isn't allowed to work for others. Or even Conan O'brien for all you Conan fans, he wasn't allowed back on tv for half a year!
