    Hi BHW.

So long story short - I have very healthy eyes.
But because my 14h/day sitting next to the screen I am getting slowly blind (and I am aware of that).

So I am just wondering - what are your precautions about your eyes.

How do you protect yourself? (don't say geeky screen monitors please :p )

Some ideas or tips to save BHW from becoming blind nation?

It's the price we pay I guess.. the only real solution is to not sit in front of the screen anymore.

New prescriptions or lasik might be the only hope.

I smoke marijuana, lots and lots of marijuana. My vision is blurred sometimes but
there's no pain. JK my friend.

Take breaks often and make sure you have proper lighting in the room. There are
some websites that you can get info from on how to setup your office/room for
    proper lighting.

If you get lasik you shouldn't need it for at least another 10 years or so. I don't think you would need it every 2 years, even if you did stare at a computer all day.

Don't quote me though since I have never had lasik. I have looked into it though and will probably be getting it eventually done.

go and see an optician and they will prescribe glassess to suit the problem, as long as you explain what the problem is,
you might find that you need more than one pair of glasses, if you are having problems with your eyes, then you will need one pair for when you are working on the pc, and the distance needs to be very clearly explained to the optician,
if you are getting headaches/or are having problems with your eyesight with other things then you might need another pair of glasses, i.e. to match the distance from the object you are looking at,

i.e. you might want one pair of glasses for when you are on a pc, and another pair for when you watch tv, (which is further away and therefore needs a different pair of glasses) or any other situation where you are getting headaches/or problems with your vision.

you also need regular checkups of your eyesight if you are having problems, say every 6 months to 1 year, as your eyeshight problems will change over time, if you need glasses and dont use them your eyesight will deteriorate very fast over time especially if you are looking at a pc screen for 14 hours a day which is close to your eyes.

lol, yeah, thats a bit extreme!

Ive had my eyes lasered, best money ive ever spent.

I use a free program called f.lux (the dot is meant to be there). It automatically dims the screen at night time, so it also helps your body clock. You can set how dark you want it to go, and if you want a quick change over or a smooth transition.

Google it and you can find it easy. If you do use it, just remember to turn it off if your doing any color sensitive or graphics work (it has an option for 1hr disable as well).

Like the others said get up and walk away from the computer and stare out your window at a distant object. It does help. For me it 's not my eyes causing the problems but the screen is triggering migraine auras every so often. The light show is not cool when you are trying to get some work done.

no, but im speaking from experience, if you are looking/staring at a pc screen for long periods of time, (and you mention that you noticed that you had eyesight problems)
then you need to go and see an optician ASAP PDQ
(as well as the other things other people mentioned such as having a break from the screen every hour or so)
if you dont do this you will end up getting migraine, insomnia, VERY bad eyesight, flu like symptoms, even mental health problems, because the eyes are causing too much strain on the brain, the glasses/taking a break etc will remedy this, your eyes arent supposed to be staring at a computer screen for 14 hours a day, if you are and you notice problems you should go see an optician PDQ, you will see a difference straight away if you have the right glasses.
lots of people wear glasses only for using a pc, or only for reading/watching tv etc etc, because they only have a problem with that, the pc screen is about 2 foot away from your eyes and your eyes werent made to stare at a pc screen for long periods of time.

frequent breaks & turn brightness all the way down. make sure pixel pitch is large enough that you're not straining to read anything.

srsly though, if you're spending 14h/day in front of a computer, your eyes aren't the only things you need to worry about ;)
