Sounded funny hearing a guy say "what is the point of having fuck you money if you don't say 'fuck you'?"

Made me laugh as I never considered this. But then again. I am a little weird as I don't think mainly about money.

I think I first need to find a context in which I could use it...
still thinking :anyway:

Enough money where you can make 99% of people around you look very poor.

Enough money to pay people to do things they wouldn't normally do, because they can't turn it down.

The lineup in Starbucks is too long. You walk up and take the coffee that belongs to someone else. You pay them $100 for the coffee rather than wait in line.

That's fuck you money.

$100 is fuck you money?

In my opinion, fuck you money is enough money to go against laws and never get caught or dealt with. Enough money that makes you pretty much untouchable. Enough money to the point you are uncancellable in this our world of cancel culture. The list goes on and on.

Just being able to pay someone $100 because you took their coffee doesn't mean shit, I could do that but I still don't have even enough money talk more of fuck you money.

You could pay $100 for someone's coffee once. Could you do it every day? That's $36,500 a year for coffee. What about when your lunch order is going to be slower than you want? Can you tip $100 to make sure you get priority? $100 for your server every time you go out for dinner and/or drinks. $100 tip to the guy who detailed your car. $100 tip to your dog walker, another $100 to the groomer. Fuck you money isn't about being able to do something one time, it's about doing it whenever you want, because fuck you.

$100 isn't fuck you money. $100 because you didn't want to wait in line at Starbucks is fuck you money.

Make it $1,000 if you really can't wrap your head around it. How many times can you pay someone $1,000 for their coffee? $1,000 isn't a lot of money in most countries. $1,000 for a cup of coffee is.

There is no amount of money you can have to go against the laws and never get caught or dealt with. El Chapo had a net worth of at least a billion dollars and was hunted and arrested multiple times. Also look up Bernie Madoff if you want to go to the extreme.

Fuck you money is not a $1000 or a billion dollars, it´s just enough money too be able too say no too anything you do not want too do that brings in money, it is individual for each person since we all have different needs in life. If you got money that covers your needs, that´s fuck you money.

Going by your analogy, no one has fuck you money. When you pay $100/$1000/$10,000 enough times you run out of money no matter how much you have. You just have to scale it up.

Saying 'fuck you' to someone is by itself an insult that's intended to annoy or infuriate another. Giving them $100/$1000/ $10,000 because you jumped the line is never meant to infuriate them but rather pacify them.

Having the meaning or intention of 'fuck you' within the financial space, essentially means having enough money to do whatever you want good or bad without being so bothered about the consequences as much as someone who doesn't.

I have heard about Bernie Madoff but don't know much about his story, but look at El chapo you mentioned. How many times did he escape how easy was it before he was captured? Take a look at Pablo Escobar's story. These guys kept on testing and pushing the limits aggressively and that's why they met their end. A poor guy or a guy with 'normal wealth' would never survive a year of such level of crime. This is not meant to glamorize crime and these are actually the extreme.

Look around you, there's more to a 'fuck you money' than just tipping people because you cut the line. That's actually funny. A great example of fuck you money is living your life just as you would after getting 'cancelled'.

Nothing in my example says you have to scale it up infinitely. I only scaled it up to $1000 so that you could understand it, because you seemed to think I meant that a $100 payment one single time was fuck you money. Elon Musk can give every person he sees $1,000 and live comfortably. Every single person he ever sees, here is $1,000, no problem.

There are lots of people with $0 in the bank, $0 regular income, and tons of debt, who don't care about the consequences as much as people with millions in the bank. Most people with $10-$100 million in the bank are very stressed out people. They live a certain way and have a certain image that doesn't allow them to relax.

You give an average poor person $20,000 and they might feel like they are the most powerful person in the world with the freedom to do anything.

Fuck you in this context is not meant to infuriate or anger people. It's meant to be dismissive or show contempt. "My time is more valuable than yours" is a fuck you, but it's not meant to make anyone feel angry, but lesser. And it's true, their time is more valuable than mine. For $100, we are both happy. They have said "fuck you," but we are both winning. It's not an insult, it's just how life works.

T-Rex is right.

That was the most common concept of fuck you money.
You don't like your boss? Fuck you, I quit.

It's usually viewed as a monthly amount of money that enables you to live worry free.
For most people, even a GUARANTEED $2,000/month in perpetuity qualifies as fuck you money.

$800,000 in SPY or VTSAX which pays about 5% in dividends easily qualifies as fuck you money

I agree with @RoiBox its about saying no to income when you don't want to do whatever you need to do for the money probably a 9-5. The whole coffee scenario you can do for free you've just gotta be that sort of person

It's not just the amount of money of money, it's how you earn the money and the legal protections you have setup.
