I don't mean creating a completely new theme, but I simply want to know how to change my theme to make it how I want. What basic skills do I need to learn for this?

I would add a basic graphics knowledge... you don't have to be able to design complex images, but a clean and neat look & feel is always a winning "plus".

There's a ton of WP tips here on the forum (if I'm not mistaken), and there's always a Google search to get you going. Honestly, the best way to learn is by doing. Don't be afraid to experiment.

There are a couple of themes that are free that are highly customizable. I use them on most of my sites. Try out 2010Weaver
