What do I do about soft 404 errors?

So I had domains that had autoblogs on them. Each domain had thousands of urls indexed and submitted to google.

A while later I decided to do something different with the domains and now all of those pages are looooong gone.

Except google still thinks they are there and I am pretty sure is penalizing me for them.

So what do I do about them? How do I let G know that I know those pages are no longer on my site and I dont want them there?

    Thanks

    Mike

404 should not damage you site , if the actual links are coming from your own site , eg sitmap.xml etc simply remove them .

Also you can use redirect to home page etc but google seems to dislike them . (as it saves the link juice)

    Google actually wants 404 .

So if I rebuild the sitemaps with the xml sitemaps plugin that should do it?

add a redirect 404 code in .htaccess file, then 404 error page will be redirect to home page.
