My girlfriend bought me a new laptop which is nice... But now she wants me to get rid of the desktop pc that I have crammed into this cramped little corner of the living room.

My desktop PC has tons of downloaded ebooks and cracked software and shit (thanks to BHW) but I dont wanna even attempt to transfer this stuff to my new laptop.

I am just wondering if a remote desktop application will allow me to access all the programs and files on my desktop pc and use them from my laptop just as if I were on my pc.

If anyone with any experience doing this stuff would chime in with advice or answers.... I would be in your debt.

    Yes.

However I would consider investing in a portable hard drive. Much simpler and more energy efficient.

Whats the big deal in that. Just get a portable hard drive of 1 terabyte from ebay for 100 bucks and you go good to go. Just connect it via USB and you are ready to browse the old stuff. No need of Remote Desktop

Install and use microsoft's RDP, this is how most VPS are accessed and used. (Tuts are easy to find in google).

Basically you will access your remote pc and be able to use it from your laptop exactly as if you were in front of the said remote computer.

But this will require to have the remote computer on and running. Getting a portable hard drive and transferring everything to use directly on your laptop is probably the best option in the end.

Well I have microsoft office, traffic travis, market samurai, camtasia, and other softwares that are not so legit when it comes to the license. I'm not even sure if I can find these cracks or licence keys anymore.

Dont think an external hardrive would help there.... but thanks for your advice.

Assuming your laptop has Windows installed, recent versions have Remote Desktop Connection already built into them, allowing you to connect to your desktop pc.
    Code:
    Win Xp

    Win 7

There's also a mac version of RDC (I'm using it to manage my VPS) :)

That's like trying to play the piano with thick winter gloves - yes, you can, but you are not gonna like it ;) I used to run programs on my friend's computer, who was in the UK at the time and had 10 times faster connection that I could get. It is truly clumsy and you will run into thousands of tiny problems that could drive you mad. Of course, when linking your PC directly to your laptop you won't have the delay problem, but you will have to configure your firewall, router (if you use any), then you will get some weird screen resolution problems, and so on....

I agree with hpv you CAN do it but it is not going to be as smooth as you envision it in your head... lol... if you are going to use it to just read ebooks should suffice.
If you want a quick fix that is fast but (can be shady) just go to a website called LOGMEIN and in about 5 min you can test it out, granted this will be slower then RDP.
You could literally sign up and test it in under 5 min. GL

I think buying a hard drive is the best option. Go for it.

Considering that its a new laptop and that it would be a home connection Im guessing, since you just dont want to run those apps on your new laptop. Then remote desktop should be fairly fast as long as your not streaming video from a website.

    Jdog37,

Go to vmwares site and download the latest version of VMware workstation 9, find a key off YouTube for it there are many. Once installed you will see an option to virtualize another physical machine on your network aka your desktop. This will let you run your old desktop on your laptop through a virtual machine so you have an os within an os giving you the ability to launch all your installed software. Hope this helps.
