What can forum moderators see? IP address, IP history etc

    Hey guys,

I made the newbie mistake of opening two accounts on a forum from the same computer and connection.

I then used another IP (mobile) to post with one of the accounts and the other account had my normal PC IP address.

I have been posting in a forum where I am sure they know what I am around to (nothing illegal, just self-promotion). I used one of the accounts to promote the other account.

My question is, will a moderator be able to notice that both accounts had the same IP address history? As I say, I used the same IP to register both accounts in different days and then posted with different IPs. I know mods have access to funky stuff but some are idiots while others are not. I am assuming the mods in the forum I was on are not very tech-savvy but they are now behaving in a different manner towards me.

Please let know of what are the possibilities of recognizing my IP history. While I dont care that they know it per se, it will hurt my promotion efforts if they know I used two accounts to promote myself.

It depends on many things. Plainly, if the moderator really magnifies your account and details, they can. It works like Google. Google can see but will only react if you'll raise a red flag and he'll see the wrong things.

Although, it depends on what kind of access a moderator has but if, let's say, the forum owner and he's tech-savvy, chances are you'll get caught when he will do a sweep especially if the database is getting full.

If you don't do anything shady or do anything that will disrespect people, I'm sure you will be fine but don't count on that long-term though.

I was self-promoting myself with the accounts. I registered my real one 5 days after I registered the fake one. I used the same laptop and connection to register both accounts so I am assuming same IP address was used (I am a newbie in this).

I have a few posts with the fake account, and more with the real account. The latest posts with the fake account have been done with my mobile and the last posts of the real account have been done with laptop. My main concern would be if they would be able to easily look into the IP history of both accounts and see that both used the same IP to register.

I mean, if a mod sees the IP used for the last post on both accounts, they'll see different IPs (albeit same location) but I am 99% sure that the mods in that forum know who I am and that I am using their forum to self-promote.

I am frustrated because if they do see that I used a fake account to promote myself, that could harm my reputation. Am I being too exaggerated/negative? Is having two accounts and promoting oneself something common in forums and the mods could have possibly not given it much importance? Again, I am risking my rep and I made the rookie mistake of registering two accounts with same IP.

If you're truly anxious about this, why not make a different account in a different IP while you are still kind of new? I don't see why you should keep this anxiety going on for months while you continue to promote and continue to risk your reputation.

That to me, is the best option you can take considering you're not feeling comfortable of the mistake you have done.

Hi . I have a similar situation . I used the fake account with a VPN+ proxy and chrome incognito that deletes the cookies on exit. The Admins were still able to trace back to my old account. I am now going to use a different browser for the fake account only .The use of instant e mails for registering arouses suspicion also.

Yes, they can. In the vBulletin backend, there's a button that says something like "Find other users with this IP" button. They can see what IP you signed up with, and what IP you have been using to post.

If it's a big forum, you have nothing to worry about, unless they are really looking for you.
