    Hello there!

I am new to IM and currently in the process of setting up a website from scratch. The concept of Affiliate Marketing really intrigues me, endless opportunities!

At the moment I am trying to do some keyword research. I have seen threads in the BST section where senior experienced members are providing this service. However, I want to at least try to do it by myself first. Experienced users had to start somewhere right? I believe I can learn the process too. I have been reading different articles that sort keywords mainly on cpc, monthly searches and competition. I was wondering what software would you suggest to use for this purpose? Perhaps something user friendly and effective with a nice learning curve. I have heard good things about Long tail pro and would like some opinions from fellow BHW members.

All advice and replies would be greatly Appreciated.

    Thank you

I have used long tail for the past two years and it's great. Now don't get me wrong you definitely don't need it to be successful. But it does make everything easier. I bought it when I first started out and the learning curve is pretty small.

If you can afford it, KISSmetrics is worth every penny. We use it and love it.

    Edited to add Ahrefs.

LTP is good, I find its KC values a great way to help you going.

All the data these softs use you can usually compile it for free yourself.

But if you are looking for something to make your life easier, long tail pro is good - don't pay for their KC and monthly rate, it's not worth it and you won't learn anything from their number, beside the fact that is most of the time wrong. Just pay for the simple option that display the top 10 results and their various metrics, then have a look yourself at each of the top 10 sites and try to figure out why it ranks.

This way, you also learn something useful, don't spend much, and reduce the risk of bombing a keyword just because it had a good KC.

Thank you, that was a very useful post! What strategy would you recommend for KW research then? If these softwares are not that great what other route should I take?
