Getting to a point where I feel like the expenses going and the money coming in warrants a separate business bank account.

I've looked at big banks, ie Chase and Wells Fargo; as well as some local credit unions. None of the fee structures seem that enticing.

Does anyone have any recommendations of less known banks or online options?

I use a local bank that is owned by our provincial government, but each location is a "franchise" (quotes because it doesn't quite act like a franchise, but similar enough) and while do they do offer personal accounts their entire schtick is to help our local businesses small or large grow. They run some pretty awesome things year round(give aways, promotions) and every business account is fee-free for the first year.

I always recommend going with something local, as they tend to support local and just give a better experience overall. I've dealt with all 15 major Canadian banks and had to drop them all, it was awful. Never again.

But isn't there a risk factor if you are opting for local banks?

Risk of what? Them going bankrupt? Didn't that just happen recently to all of the banks in the US, even the major ones?

Pick ones that are longstanding and turn profit yearly, or control huge assets. I also recommend spreading your shit out, of course. Don't keep all your eggs in 1 basket etc. But for your income account you want to get the best rates and the best service, and local always offers the best service.
