I have a website - Site A. Its ranking for a few keywords, but its just a throw away site and doesnt convert well, and also technically isn't even approved for the CPA program I am targeting.

My plan was always to rank it, and then 301 redirect it to my money site (Site B) - which converts very well, good layout, and its approved for the CPA program in question.

I want to make the redirect live when the keywords are all ranked at the top, as I dont know how long the ranks will stay in place once the redirect has been set up.

Just wondering if anyone has opinion on how this will work - will the positions stay the same, or drop - and if so how quickly will they drop?

Also, if I continue to build links to Site A, will that work well? Will it pass through to Site B and continue to rank it?

It will pass almost all value through the redirect so it's nothing like a 'tiered' link. At one time it was estimated to be 95%+ of the value but this may have been changed by Google.

If you redirect a big profile to a small site it can get an immediate penalty. I've seen recommendations here for redirecting an established link profile to an aged domain to mitigate the possibility of a penalty but I can't speak from first hand experience on that. I can verify that it passes almost everything including SERP ranks.

If you're planning to redirect, I would recommend just doing it now and continue working on ranking the site it's redirected to.

As the other guy said 301'ng will not pass the full value of the link juice, in fact I've read that 70% is what's actually passed these days. Nobody knows the exact number or effect but 301'ng and ranking DOES work.

Check many of the newer domains that pop high in the rankings and you'll see a lot of 301's pointing to those domains.

Another question - now I have performed the redirect, so site 1 is automatically forwarded to site to via 301.

if I continue to build links to site 1, will that just benefit site 2?

because currently site 1 is ranked #4 and site 2 is ranked #120. So building links to site 1, is it being wasted? As the juice is going straight to the unbanked site?

If you're already using Webmaster tools it's worth letting them know too, best way to not loose rankings.

Search "Tell Google when your site moves"

    Hi Mate,

Based on our experiences we have noticed that it works best if you build and point all the new links to your main money site rather than directly to the 301 domain.

Also, you quite shortly should start to notice site 2 start to rise slowly in rankings and come close to where site 1 currently was ranked :)

Keep us posted on your results! :)

    Cheers,

Trust me, GWT doesn't need to know about this site :)

Thanks. That makes sense. I'll update this thread with results.
