I host a Joomla website...
In my opinion, if you're going the free route... there is a Joomla Template contest every year, check those out before you check any other themes out. They are usually the best looking, and fastest templates out there. Unless you are going for a niche theme and that will probably take some cash to get something decent...

there are 1000s of free templates for wordpress. Joomla has less of them.
I'm not sure what you want. So its hard to give it to you
Basicly I was just wondering which ones were really popular and in demand at the moment. Couldnt care less if they are free or $1k each

Does anyone know of any references that show what should go into a successful theme? I see a lot that really look hot, but I'd like to know if any actual testing has been done. A graphic artist is not a marketer is not a web designer.
