I am a graphic designer who does a bit of it all. Sadly it seems I keep hitting a ceiling with my profits. I also do large format printing but can't seem to go very very high in terms of income.

What have you known to work to produce the greatest income?

I don't know how much is your large income
But App UI/UX design is one of the best ways to make money
One of my friend charges $50/hr and he makes around $400 each day.

I have to agree. For now, UI/UX design is probably most profitable. $50/hr is really low for my area which is more like $80-120/hr this type of design work. Depends on how much you work though. Guys who work for themselves are almost never billable 100% of the time and clients come and go. You have to work really hard to keep the clients flowing for the first 5 years or so until you build up enough regulars to survive off of. But keep in mind your regular clients should account for no more than about 35% of your total income.

At least in my area, it's almost impossible to make six figures doing graphic design mainly because, agencies don't pay worth a crap, and for those who work for themselves, it's a service industry. The more work you bring in, the more work you have to do.

I agree that if you design tshirts you can have a big income. People are always interested in buying cool shirts.

Thanks for the great reply. Might I ask what all you need to be a great UI/UX designer? Can my photoshop skills make me what I need to be? Would I need to learn other programs etc?

I would suggest you start at UX pin https://www.uxpin.com/knowledge.html and download all their PDF books for free. Read every book they offer. It would be a great start to building your UX/UI skills.

After that, read all of Apple's human interface design guidelines. You'll really begin to understand how important good design is when it comes to designing apps.

    https://developer.apple.com/ios/human-interface-guidelines/overview/design-principles/

You could design everything in Photoshop without a problem but there are other tools out there that have become available that can make the design process more productive. Example: wire framing tools such as UX Pin. So UX/UI design is often accomplished using multiple tools. Overtime you'll figure out which tools work best for you.

LOL yes, if OP wants to make real money, I agree. They should find another job. I've never met a 'designer' that makes 6 figures a year. There is simply too much time consuming bs from clients that will keep your income ceiling at sub $100k. Not to mention, you bring in more projects, then you have to work more. Add in the fact all but large companies place very little value on 'design' these days and you have a recipe for a job that often pays less than a fork lift driver at Costco. It's not about how to earn more, the low income is just the nature of the business.

And therein lies the problem in graphic design when it comes to making a large income. There is no 'effortlessly' when clients are involved. Change this. Change that. Make it so it looks more like this. Add this over here. Let's put something in this empty space. I want to go with a different color scheme. Our logo isn't big enough. I'll get back to you on that question (weeks later). Why doesn't it look exactly like the ad I showed you? My daughter likes purple so let's change it to purple. Does the photo you included cost extra?

It's very rare, that a project goes effortlessly when clients are involved; no matter how good you are at design or project management. Even if you are charging hourly and especially if you are charging a flat fee. It's the nature of the beast and the career path of the aspiring graphic designer should not include 'I want to make more money'. Unless you start your own agency, you're likely to top out in salary when you become Senior Art Director which is a low pay grade compared to 100's of other career paths after you put in 15+ years..

Of course there are always exceptions, and some graphic designers who also do other things like write design books on the side, teach at the college level, talk at seminars, etc. They can achieve a combined income of $100k+, but it's A LOT more work on top of graphic design which is a lot of work already. You want to make big money, you should get into some other line of work or start some other type of business.

Are you asking or telling us this works for Interior Designers?

I know that industry quite well too, along with arch. Interior Design earnings potential is vastly different than Graphic Designers. You can make big commissions pushing high-end furniture and furniture systems from expensive manufacturers, and typically you're working with wealthy clients with large budgets. There are also a lot of rules and regulations you must follow when it comes to building codes and OSHA so there is some added incentive there to charge more money.
