What are some ways webhosting companies mislead customers ?

The most unrealistic ways i have seen is with "unlimited storage". Every company has fair usage policy and some of them have quite reasonable limits however there is nothing as such "unlimited"

as already said unlimited storage, unlimited traffic ..anything that says "unlimited". there is always a limit and you can see it in the fine print.

Unlimited is limited by number of inodes you can create.
Every hosting company follow this one golden rule to save themselves from guys like you and me.

"unlimited hosting" - yeah ok, lemme do some stress test on it. :P

From the other side sometimes clients want more than web hosting provider can provide that. Most clients do not bother reading of TOS and AUP. Such approach sometimes ends up with arguments.

The new fad among them to sell their shit is mentioning 'cloud' storage. Lol

Alexhost says they offer a basic anti-ddos protection but "basic" means "no protection" in their case

In Unlimited shared hosting they will say all are unlimited and once you got the plan they will mail you to upgrade to vps as you reached max ram usage or something.

the word Unlimited is completely mislead term but if some hosting provider states Unmetered bandwidth then it is true, but you should always read terms of service of the provider

Yes, yes, yes, they give you a "FREE" free plugin

Testing to loose money. No thanks
testing to know things, not to lose money. Losing money is only the effect of a conclusive test. Besides, I was referring to the smallest amount of money you can spend, which is probably under $1 or something insignificant anyway. You just add the lowest priced product/service to your shopping cart and godaddy will make sure that when you hit the "pay now" button you will actually get charged 10x more because other products/services had just been crammed down your throat after paying. And then your test will be over and conclusive :)

So how is that I can buy unlimited download and upload for $20 in the form of internet connection and not get ultimated bandwidth on a server?

Once I wanted to change my web hosting to a more reliable one and that everything that I was promised on the new hosting in the end turned out to be partially a lie. Every web hosting company wants to attract a lot of customers and promises all the time that which does not exist in reality.
